The optimal number of participants (player AND DM)!

I consider 2 to 3 players the ideal group size. Less overlap, more time for individual PCs, more options for me as the DM to let them interact with NPCs, and to play NPCs.

Help with House Rule Elves and Dwarves ???

Just one question: If you boost dwarves and elves that much, what about humans? Their bonus feat is meaningless compared to a free EWP and weapon focus and endurance in case of dwarves, not to mention the WF feat for two weapons elves get, whose effective 20 bonus skill points for listen and...

How Much time do you spend in preparation for a nights gaming session ?

I usually prepare up to 2 hours, sometimes more per session. Monster/NPC Design: Usually 30 to 50 %, depending on the importance of the NPC or Monster. For a significant combat enemy I spend more time, for other NPCs I either don't prepare stats, or just grab some from Birched's NPC generator...

[3.5] Damage Reduction & Andy Collins

Don't know if anyone is interested, but I ran a combat last evening, putting two level 14 PCs (paladin-7/Fighter-7 and Fighter-8/Weapon Master-6) + 1 npc rogue-12 against a a modified monster with DR 15/-, AC 30 and the melee attacks and hit points (123) of a 3.0 pit fiend. Even with the weapon...

(RANT) (longish) A player wishes to drop

Amen to that. I have seen players go, and I never try to persuade them to stay - IMHO, it does not work out. If you have some issues with the game, then one can accomodate it, but if you are about to leave... as long as the group as a whole has fun it probably is better that way. As far as XP...

[3.5] Damage Reduction & Andy Collins

Discouraged, encouraged... it all depends on the DM. If the DM is fond of using undead and other monsters immune to critical hits, rogues and keen improved critical scimitar/rapier wielders are not as effective as the greatsword wielding barbarian, effectively getting discouraged. If the DM is...

D&D 3.x 3.5 power attack: the designers' rationale

You know, I don't think the classic rapier & main gauche fighter gets more out of GWF and GWS than the greatsword wielder. Your statement is only true if you apply it to the fighter that wields two identical weapons. Frankly, the fact that power attack by the numbers did more for a two-weapon...

    How fast should NPCs advance?

My NPCs advance as I need them to. If I want the mentor to remain ahead, then he will remain ahead, if I want the student of a PC to level a bit faster then he will, and so on.

Mage Armor scaled up? or Where are the high-level abjurations?

Wasn't there an improved Mage Armor in the 3.5 thread?

Easily fixed with a house rule.

    No more double empowered fireballs!!

    I like this change.

Aging, unaging, and "...you still die when your time is up"

IMC, I don't enforce aging rules (although players are free to impose them on their PCs if they want to). I don't run campaigns that cover that many years in-game anyway, and I'd probably run a "find the secret to immortality" quest long before.

[3.5] Damage Reduction & Andy Collins

Is this a trick question? If you are serious, then here is my answer: The DM writes down in the creatures statblock: The DR of the creature can be bypassed by either silver or magic weapons, or by a magic silver weapon. Easy enough?

[3.5] Damage Reduction & Andy Collins

Re: re Again, just because you cannot ignore the DR does not mean you cannot hurt the creature in question - it will just be more difficult and take longer. DR tops out around 15, not at all invulnerable, especially not to high-level melee fighters. I don't see any problem at all.

Are you a "Walking Thrift shop", or an "Adventurer"

The majority of the PCs in my campaign would not wear things that make them look bad. But then, in my campaign, reputation is pretty important, as are looks and style. Even if that clown mask granted you mind blank you would not want the effects it had on your reputation.

Role-Playing XP (BobROE please stay out)

He could award XP based on the adventure goals reached, or assign a CR to social encounters and calculate it normally. I don't use xp at all, our group just levels up when we feel like it, or when the DM deems it fitting.

How do you handle buying magic items in cities?

Simple. I don't have magic items for sale with the exception of potions and scrolls.

Which fighting style does your fighter use?

The single one-handed weapon was not mentioned.

    Psionics Handbook 3.5 Confirmed!

Well, I am glad - that is one book I don't have to even consider buying.

What type of DM are you??

    Without a doubt storyteller.
