I personally never had trouble making up maps in Roll 20. A few squares and circles and you got a battlefield! You could also upload/purchase general maps/tokens for the odd curveball.

Last time they tried that, we got 4th Edition.

Sandbox has fallen out of favor among publishers. I don't recall any major new sandboxes within the past ten years.
