    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

On the other hand, just re-watched Pulp Fiction and...it completely holds up. Not overrated, despite its solid platinum reputation. My kid agreed (he's becoming a bit of a cinephile).

Fair enough. Those are precisely the three that I think are better, but that's probably just a taste thing.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

I'm currently re-watching Goodfellas with my kid...and feeling like it might actually be kind of overrated? There are some amazing moments - obviously the long shot of entering the Copacabana - but in terms of story it's a bit of a shaggy dog. Still a great movie, but I don't think it is up...

Five Takeaways From the 2025 Monster Manual

I think the "everyday" monsters are often much improved.

Five Takeaways From the 2025 Monster Manual

In my experience with the 2024 rules, most level 5 characters are close to a match for a CR 5 mob. Certainly 3 characters will be more than a match. Having the fight be in pitch darkness was a clever move on your part to make the odds more even, and I think it is kind of awesome that some of the...

What are you reading in 2025?

I can't speak to the rest of your experience - I teach at an IB World school and there is no problem with rigour. However, not taking marks off for disciplinary reasons is good pedagogy. Work should be assessed based upon the preset criteria for the task. Failing to hand in work or handing it in...

Five Takeaways From the 2025 Monster Manual

I agree with all the OP's points. Five is the one that bugs me the most, and I don't understand why you couldn't have both the generic templates and a few specific creatures representing each of the major species (a dwarf warrior, an elf scout, an orc shaman, a human priest, and so on). It's...

D&D 5E (2024) Should the environmental conditions scale by tier?

See, that seems disrespectful to the players, from my perspective. It's like a pat on the head.

Jeremy Crawford Also Leaving D&D Team Later This Month

Great post! Also, I really wanna see what D&D Go! looks like!

Sure. 100%. Art is subjective. And a subjective opinion that is based on little knowledge or rigour is, to me, very uninteresting. I teach literature, among other subjects. I'm pretty expert at it, with years of experience, multiple degrees, etc. (I also teach film, to a lesser degree, but I...

WotC Would you buy WotC products produced or enhanced with AI?

Socrates was not alone, and it was not just in Greece. Literacy has, in fact, often been treated as scary and dangerous. It was supposed that it would make youth unable to memorize key aspects of culture, and would expose them to dangerous ideas. It would make them lazy and unproductive (public...

WotC Would you buy WotC products produced or enhanced with AI?

Historically, old people always object to transformative new technologies, and always frame it in strongly moralistic terms. Socrates thought that literacy would ruin the youth of Athens. Change is hard. The printing press, telephone, automobile (“brothels on wheels”)… every single time. But a...

    CMON Games In Trouble

Yeah, their stuff is produced in China. I’ve backed them, and have one KS currently backed; their miniatures are really top notch. So this sucks. And yeah, the tariff situation on top might mean they are screwed. I’m thinking of all the good and talented people who must be living with so much...

D&D General What races/species populate your DnD world?

I don’t start with a list of species, playable or otherwise. If a player has a cool concept for a character, I’ll probably say yes. And if I have cool idea for an encounter, then that species is now part of my campaign world! If I tried to prescribe things in advance, I’d just box myself in. I’m...

D&D 5E (2014) Question for folks who use D&D Beyond: How well does it work with the new rules?

So, I have seen every episode of Critical Role. And they are all outstanding players. Some still struggle with the nuances of the rules, but you are very much exaggerating the extent to which they struggle. But, more importantly, you are not acknowledging something that every experienced...

Do All of Your RPG Maps Now Belong To Judges Guild? ... and more?

I do have nostalgic feelings for City State of the Invincible Overlord - one of my buddies had it - this is 1979 or 1980 - and lent it to me and I was mesmerized by it. So, yeah, it really sucks to see what they've become. Or maybe always were, I dunno. Edit: also, not a lot of respect for A)...

D&D General Cities are theme parks!

I don't love characterizing Vancouver, where I lived for many years and married my spouse, as a pleaser city with mental issues. I feel like this thread is going to go sideways, fast, if your other real life inspirations are as "amusingly" characterized.

I think these types of threads are going to seem very quaint in a few years.

D&D 5E (2024) Should the environmental conditions scale by tier?

Depends how you test it. I'm going to scale that test to the threat level I think suits the story. Or I'm not going to have it in the story, because it doesn't matter. Edit: this is also why I do constantly doubling falling damage: 1d6 for 10', 2d6/20, 4d6/30, 8d6/40, 16d6/50, 32d6/60, 64d6/70...
