Buying games to better enjoy live plays?

Live plays are my go-to entertainment while I'm painting miniatures, which is a pretty good chunk of time. By far the largest chunk of time has gone to Critical Role because they have so much content, and 90%+ of that is D&D.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Not that I’ve noticed. It’s very much like when they play D&D - Mercer has a hyper-detailed setting prepared. In episode 2 he even overruled Sam Riegel’s description of the killing blow against a tough mob and replaced it with his own. It was a very cool death, but still…

D&D 5E (2024) Man I hate the organization of the 2024 Monster Manual

Eh, if it's a new DM they're probably using DDB and aren't even aware that this is an issue for some.

    The Toxic Avenger 2025

As a fan of Troma films in general and Toxie in particular, this looks like pretty much exactly what I want in a TA remake. This should not be a film for subtlety and good taste, and the trailer made me laugh out loud three separate times. I'll be there!

Captain America: Brave New World - Official Trailer (2025)

Yeah, I thought about that, but as you say, there isn't even one line in the film to explain why the USA is so worried about Japan's navy. If we are just to assume that in this alternate earth Japan is a much stronger power than in ours, then that runs counter to most of the MCU, which typically...

D&D General Your last adventure in photos.

It’s more the role play aspect I was the thinking of.

    RPG-style Board Games

I'm not seeing this - there are tons of good party games and tons of good strategy games and most reviewers appreciate the difference. Nobody is judging Wavelength by the same metric as Eldritch Horror, to cite two of my favourites.

    D&D 5E (2024) Armor as THP?

I don't care for the idea myself - it it ain't broke, and all that - but why not try it and see if you like it better? I do think it will add a lot of unforeseen complications that you will have to balance.

Captain America: Brave New World - Official Trailer (2025)

My spouse and I finally got around to watching this on D+. It's bad, easily the worst MCU film. Quantumania was pointless but at least had some gonzo visuals going for it. CA: BNW is blandly unexciting and instantly forgettable. The casting is terrible. Anthony Mackie is a good actor in a lot...

    RPG-style Board Games

Hmmm...I've just never found much to HeroQuest. It's a pretty basic game. It's better than those miniatures-based D&D Games that basically ripped it off, for sure, but there isn't a lot to the basic system, and I kind of hate rolling the dice for your movement as a mechanic, both in a story...

Ivan Van Norman Leaves Darrington Press

My strongest memory of Ivan Van Norman is of the rather awesome Dread mini-campaign he ran on Geek and Sundry. I wish him well!

D&D 5E (2014) The Illrigger: Why I hate this class and love what it could have been.

Couldn't agree more about the name of this class: it's terrible for all kinds of reasons. Setting aside what some folks might do with it, it's also confusing and silly. I don't see a lot of players going "I wanna play an Illrigger!" If it's a Hell Knight, call it a Hell Knight (or Death Knight...

Dark Horse Reveals First Dungeons & Dragons Comic

I tend to agree with you if we are talking about mainstream superhero comics, but this is amazing time for independent comics!

Dark Horse Reveals First Dungeons & Dragons Comic

I don't love it - it gives me X-Force vibes. Feels like a superhero comic. The novel's cover feels much more D&D to me.

What Do You Call This Popular Beverage?

Bear with me here: is it possible that people in different places have different words for things? Spoiler: it is just as accurate to call it a "pop machine" - in fact, more accurate here, because if you told your kid to visit the soda fountain they wouldn't know what the hell you were talking...

    D&D General Zero-Prep D&D Game?

Fiasco is show up and play, but it’s one shots. That’s the best example I can think of. Starter kits that can be played out of the box. Though those have tons of prep done by the designers, and the GM should at least familiarize themselves It is hard for me to imagine a zero prep campaign of...

WotC 3% Of Hasbro's Workforce Laid Off

WotC's best 5e setting book, IMO.

D&D General Your last adventure in photos.

Jeebus - 14 players?!? You DM that? I've run TTRPGs for as many as 20 or so, but that was using Dread where all they had to do was pull jenga blocks, not fricken D&D 1e. I don't think I could manage it.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I’ve watched every show CR has made…but that may not last much longer. Grimdark is not my taste in any media.
