There is in fact a difference. I came up with that town waaaaaaay before that session, so that's when the farrier was there, not during the session the player reminded me that I had forgotten to write it down. The difference is timing. Making it up when the player asks is creating it on the...

It really doesn't matter, since we are treating both sides as "quantum." It's not as if we are just aiming the term at your playstyle. Then that just adds a third different way to do it. DM in advance----->DM in the moment----->Player in the moment. For me it gets less desirable the farther...

I answered it several time. Quantum for the DM before the players encounter it =/= quantum for the players hitting a random encounter because someone failed a knowledge engineering check. Those are two different things. Not by D&D RAW there's not. Both use the same tools in the same amount...

That's probably because they aren't the same. How many times do we have to say that there's a difference between the DM rolling in advance and the player rolling to determine things in the moment? That there's a difference between PC skill influencing the roll and a roll happening without PC...

Depends on what you mean by "don't approve of." We have been using it ONLY to mean that it doesn't work in our games. Unless that's what you mean, then "don't approve of" doesn't apply. We have expressed no such disapproval for it being used in other peoples' games.

    Optimization and optimizers...

That's never an optimization problem. There are so many ways to go, that if a player is picking up things to step on someone else's niche, that's a player being a jerk problem, not an optimization problem.

    Optimization and optimizers...

They really don't matter much at all. Most games never get to 10th level, so the vast majority of players never see fighters reach 3 or more attacks. For low levels, the difference between that 14 and that 18 is +2. Out of every 20 swings on average, that PC will hit 2 more times. A typical...

No, because if they really meant that, they would take the incredibly easy step of you know, not using the disparaging term in the first place. I don't remember anyone saying quantum was disparaging. I do recall @AbdulAlhazred trying to say we meant something we didn't, but I don't remember him...

I don't require anyone to change. I'm just pointing out that if they use disparaging comment, their "support" of the style is suspect, and that if people here on the forum use those terms, they are self-sabotaging their own posts/threads. They are using terminology that is pretty much...

No I didn't. I described the resolution process of using an unrelated(no immediate connection) die roll in that moment to determine if a cook was behind the door or somewhere else, rendering her both there and not there until that resolution concluded, as "quantum." It wasn't because I don't...

You take on no roles in hero quest. You do take on roles in a roleplaying game. Even the gamists. Being gamist doesn't equate to treating D&D like Heroquest.

If Monopoly were a RPG, sure. Then being the shoe would mean something much more than the board game version. Monopoly is far more limited than an RPG, though. In an RPG even the most gamist player still encounters traps, NPCs to talk to, etc. They are doing much more than rolling dice...

I do appreciate that you do, but I doubt that some of the others here will give up their disparaging terminology.

The point of the paragraph is that children take on the role of people/professions that they admire and want to be when they grow up. That's an admirable quality that kids have. When applied to RPGs, it simply means we are taking on the roles that we want to play/be. I want to be Cormac the...

It doesn't matter if it's a priority, we are all still make believing that we are something else, like children do. The different styles may have different approaches and goals when it comes to play, but we all get there via pretend characters of some sort. I think where you may be misstepping...

It's not much of a criticism and it applies to all RPGs and all playstyles. We are all pretending to be something else in these types of games.

The one example was instead of the derogatory "Princess Play," and then talking about childhood heroes, something like, "Playing Childhood Heroes" would be a fine neutral term.

Since there was quite literally nothing quantum about it, I don't get it, no. Hard to get something that has nothing to do with the words written down. 🤷‍♂️
