D&D 5E (2014) Rules Discussion: Somatic Components and Restrained

Welcome to "rulings, not rules" everybody. ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Tiefling preview!

I seem to remember another uproar when 3e turned halflings into dreadlock-wearing river rats. We got over it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tiefling preview!

I'm not sure how Paizo expanded on them is really relevant to WotC's interests? I'm not very well-informed on PF but didn't they appear only 2 years ago in the Advanced Race Guide? There's also about 2 million players of the Neverwinter PC game which are familiar with the Turathi tiefling...

D&D 5E (2014) Merwin said it better than Schwalb

Yeah, there's a big difference between optimization and favoring mechanics that let you fully realize a character concept. It looks like his followup point addresses that difference. For me, 4e scratches that itch pretty well. Classes and builds play very differently from each other (even if...

D&D 5E (2014) Excited about the new version so I preordered

It certainly seems to have brought back a lot of old forum members.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tiefling preview!

This sums it up nicely. It is regrettable that the 4e tiefling usurped the name, but what's done is done and I'd wager the majority of players today are more familiar with that version than its Planescape incarnation. And I say that as a huge Planescape fan.

A Question for 4E Players: Where to now?

My weekly group will stay with 4e for the foreseeable future. My bimonthly group is enjoying 4e now, but since the majority of players in that group are fans of 1e and 2e, we might switch to 5e if the PHB and DMG are tempting enough.

    Rangers: Your Thoughts and Preferences

To use an oft-repeated meme, "This" I don't have much more to add, other than that I hope rangers get a lot of swift spells which function more like (gasp) spell-like abilities/martial exploits rather than actual stand-there-and-mumble-some-words-of-magic-while-making-funny-gestures spells.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Icons of the Realms Starter Sets have arrived

Thanks guys. Having to get a full case of boosters sounds obscenely expensive at 32 per case. I'll have to watch the secondary markets.:-S

    D&D 5E (2014) so, mountain dwarf wizards...

In early 3e I had a recurring dwarf sorcerer NPC named Stonebrother Lomar. All he had was earth- and stone-related spells. It'll be interesting what he will look like once the PHB is released. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling Initiative

Magnetic whiteboard, magnetic circles and strips with letters for NPCs (which correspond to the marker next to their miniature on the tabletop) and magnetic strips with the character names. It's been working for 10 years or so. Also you can write on it for oddball stuff.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tiefling preview!

That was my first thought. Since FR is the core now, and FR has 4e tieflings, it makes sense they went with the 4e tieflings. I'm sure the 2e tiefling will be available at some point as a variant. Edit: By the way they did open up for horn appearance variations. All true 4e tieflings had the...

D&D 5E (2014) Idea for removing the ability score cap...

Instead of removing the 20 cap, why not create post-20th-level feats that grant superhuman abilities and require a 20 in the relevant stat? Just some ideas: Epic Strength You are capable of superhuman feats of strength. Some examples are shown below: Add your proficiency bonus to Strength...

D&D 5E (2014) Observations on the Monsters in the Starter Set.

OMG, are you saying 5e is World of Warcraft? ;) On a more serious note, there were plenty of "vampiric regeneration" type abilities players could get in 2e and 3e which worked in a similar manner (vampiric touch spell is also an old favorite). There's no reason it has to utterly destroy a soul.
