D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

10th+ level in D&D has always taken finesse and/or willing to go a little crazy. I'm curious if the new MM handles higher level PCs better than 2014; I'm sure most of the higher level monsters didn't get the sort of playtesting the lower levels ones did back when this all started.

    D&D 5E (2024) Where to next, WotC?

I suspect we'll see another revision of Curse of Strahd soon. After that, I suspect we'll see more books about specific creature types, especially since they've swapped several around. If you start seeing a Rules Compendium, Spell Comendium or Magic Item Compendium or another Compendium of...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Something that has been on my mind a bit, and I went to check was the frequency of Orcs (not as wandering encounters, but full-blow encounters) in the official 5E adventures. Checking Beyond, I'm only getting a hit for Storm King's Thunder and Lost Mines, and even in the latter Phandelver and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

I didn't count Bestiary Fantastic, that's the base monster book for the 54 game, not a d20 book.

🤷‍♂️ C'mon, consistency - is it that hard WotC?

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual Organisation

I don't have the new MM, but how are they doing the dragons? I thought all the age categories were under the main dragon's heading. On beyond, the Red dragon is as follows: Adult Red Dragon Ancient Red Dragon Red Dragon Wyrmling Red Dragon Youth Shouldn't it be it starts with "Red Dragon"...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Commoner could be used for those rare times you get a mob with pitchfork and torches. <Edit:> Also, we don't just stats for the bad guys. Like gold or silver dragons, you could have a commoner that either needs to be protected or is along with the party for one reason or another. It should...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Yeah, they do look like a couple hobgoblins and a bugbear - but there is an orc down on the field (you can see his face). The blurb for the cover read though "The last three survivors of an orcish army, their standard still aloft, challenge their elvin opponents to one last fight. Jim...

D&D 5E (2024) Above the Table Interview with Jeremy Crawford.

"We must brand everything with our own unique look" "The classic D&D monsters that have been around for 35 years must be replaced with versions that act nothing like they always have" I'm so done with 2024.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

For me, this will always be the iconic image I associate with for orcs. Evil, yes. But also with a touch of defiance and nobility.

D&D 5E (2024) What Monster Should Have Made the Cut?

You can go to Beyond now and if you go to the monster section, filter on the 2024 MM entries. May not be able to see the details, but you'll see the names.

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual Organisation

Perhaps the way to do it would have been to go alphabetical, with a blurb entry for groups like Demons, Dragons, or even Elf. At the bottom of that section, list everyone whose in that category so you can go to the individual entry. You get to see what the group/subtype has in common, and then...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

Trolls and fire, Werewolves and silver, Fey and cold iron - yeah, I mostly agree. But it can get a bit sketchy if its the only thing that can permanently put something down. You end up with golf bags to handle all the different possibilities you may encounter. It is a neat approach to put in...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

I've literally made two books of mostly from-scratch monsters (and working on a 3rd). Not having the monster creation rules in the 2024 DMG - and it looks like not in the 2024 MM either - is beyond disappointing. Sure, I can use the 2014 guidelines, but then that doesn't incentivize me to buy...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

I do wish the case that silver trumped magic vs. lycanthropes. Maybe normal weapons do nothing (Immunity), Magic weapons do half (Resistance) and Silver does full? Or, could go a step up Normal --> Resistance, Magic --> Full, Sliver --> Extra (I think 2024 is close to the latter).

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual Organisation

In the end, there's no perfect way to sort the monsters, just pick a method and stick with it - and try to be as consistant as you can. When I first saw the 2014 MM, I thought it was silly that the animals were in a separate section from the rest of the monsters, the same with the NPCs. Why...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

🤷‍♂️ No PC class or race should have a universal immunity, and there should be a chink in their armor somewhere. And monks are not weaklings - they are as skilled as any other martial character, with innately supernatural abilities. Also, learn to take a joke.

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

Oh I certainly remember the golf bags full of +1 swords in my own 2E campaigns; but the DM's advice from the designers at the time would have been a very finger-wagging "you need to make those disappear via theft, the PCs certainly can't sell them.". And the video games were a different beast...
