The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

I can't believe anyone would be bothered by the idea of male medusae. The medusa in Greek mythology is a singular creature. In D&D medusae are a race of monstrous humanoids. They've always been depicted this way in D&D. If they're a separate race, they have to reproduce some way. Parthenogenesis...

    D&D 4E 4E Forgotten Realms Hopes/Fears ?

My group has played in FR since 1e. Several of us own a copy of every supplement published for the setting and most of the novels. We love the changes in FR and are looking forward to running many new stories in the setting. It looks like they are reinvigorating the realms and restoring the...

    Minions are:

I love the minion rules. I've been using mooks in 3e for some time now. They had minimum hp per level and NPC classes. I like 4e minion rules better. Most of the time my mooks died with one hit, and there was no reduction in bookkeeping when they survived a feeble hit. My mooks in 3e will all...

    Predator Gnomes!!

It seems to me that gnomes have finally become ... gnomes. I will be including them in my homebrew for the first time since I realized I didn't have to make room for everything in the PHB (around 1980).

    Five Alignments?

QFT. Five is more than enough, with the emphasis on more. I'm just glad that with alignment based mechanical effects out the window, I can throw out alignment completely without rewriting half the system.

    Striker, Defender, Leader, Controller Dynamic

QFT. It's true now, and it was true in the good old days as well. No one says you can't play with an unbalanced party or a party that doesn't work together well; you could in earlier editions and you should be able to do so in 4e. But that doesn't mean that a balanced party that works together...

Are there too few known encounter powers?

Maybe I'll feel different once I've played 4e for a while, but I can't see the limited number of encounter powers as a bad thing. There's nothing wrong with using at-will abilities half of the time in combat.

D&D 4E Game Economics: 4E Finally Got It Right

I like the economy article. I've always favored having merchants pay less than 50% market value for magic items. I use the used book store method for determining what you can get for an item. If a merchant can sell an item for X gp, he will give you 1/2 X gp in trade or 1/4 X gp in coin. The...

Excerpt: You and Your Magic Items

The magic items are pretty much what we were expecting - not that this is a bad thing. I really like the new method of identifying magic items. The default is that you can identify an item by playing around with it for a while. I've always liked this method. It's what we used to do in 1e, try...

Sorcerer in PHB II: Rich Baker says a little

I personally hated the whole dragon bestiality thing. I'm hoping it's gone in 4e. That was some rank fluff I never used and never will.

    Standing, does it provoke?

IMO improved trip was the most abusive maneuver in 3e. I'm really glad that standing up doesn't provoke in 4e. Losing your move actions seems penalty enough in a game where tactical movement is important.

How're we supposed to divvy the loot?

I've never been in a game that used the OP's 'standard system.' I certainly don't think I would enjoy it. In my group, the characters (through their respective players) discuss who gets what items. We had one player who was incredibly greedy and whiny when he didn't get exactly what he wanted...

Are you buying the rule books separately or as a gift set?

I ordered a gift set from Amazon, but I'm buying a second PHB from B&N on the day it's released so I can read it before my gift set arrives. My wife will need a PHB of her own when we're playing after all.

    Dragonlance vs. Forgotten Realms

I really like DL, except for tinker gnomes and gully dwarves were the exceptions. I found them to be too silly for my taste. I really like FR, except for all the high level NPCs littering the setting and the fact that adventurer is a licensed profession. I'm willing to play either, but tinker...

    Residuum: A Re-Fluffing

The excerpt made it clear that the GM can leave out residuum altogether if they like. As for the name, I hate it too, but I'll just call it numina, mana or something along those lines. I prefer the magic is energy trope, but if you don't then the OP's suggestion seems a very reasonable...

How will PC's make money in your world

The characters will find some treasure during adventures. Many monsters like to accumulate treasure hordes. There are also lost hordes in old ruins. I also like to pay characters for adventures, if they're working for someone wealthy enough to afford it. One of the main differences between the...

What class will be your first?

I guess I'm just lucky in the number of GMs and campaigns that will be available to me. I'll be running first for our Friday night group, but we play twice a week and play multiple campaigns in rotation. My first characters: human wizard (home brew PoL) - a standard 4e PoL setting inspired by...

    D&D 4E 4e default campaign setting

I've never seen anything that would indicate that the designers were combining classic D&D settings into one world. We've always known that FR and Eberron were going to be continued as separate, published settings in 4e. The only recent surprise is that other classic settings will also be coming...

    Encumberance... In or Out?

These are the categories of things I like having encumbrance for. We usually have a rough idea of the weight each character is carrying. We just don't turn it into an exercise in bean counting.

    Encumberance... In or Out?

I like having an encumbrance system, but I usually ignore it. I start counting encumbrance only when the characters are trying to carry too much loot. If they keep it reasonable (and don't try to take every mundane sword and dagger they find on their opponents), I don't worry about it. I think...
