    Let's Read Daggerheart +

That's what I was wondering: is the GM move the consequence?

D&D 5E (2024) Psionics: What Do You Want?

The distinction itself is completely arbitrary. There's no difference between "magic" and "psychic powers" that matters.

D&D 5E (2024) What Should a Psion Be Able To Do?

My point is, if you let them do everything "psychics" can do in media, they are just wizards. What's the point then?

D&D 5E (2024) What Should a Psion Be Able To Do?

I think restricting it to the Professor X/Jean Grey paradigm of telepathy and telekinesis is the best way to make sure it has an identity of its own. Once you start adding pyrokinesis and biokinesis you are just another caster.

D&D 5E (2024) Psionics: What Do You Want?

I still think that the Warlock is the best design structure for any new D&D class: strong theme based mechanics with some built in versatility and progression that isn't overwhelming. So if I were to make a psion it would look a lot like the Warlock, with psionic powers replacing invocations...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Here is a fun question: What media (other RPG, video game, movie, cartoon, novel, comic) setting do you think would make a great Daggerheart Campaign Frame? How would you implement it?

    Daggerheart has been Officially Released

And you can really do them all if you are playing DH because it really is aiming to be all of them at once.

    Let's Read Daggerheart +

It's weird because there are some people worried about getting exhausted by having to come up with a innovative description of rolls EVERY SINGEL TIME, and I don't actually think the game tells you that you have to do that.

Lots of PBtAs and FitDs credit their inspirational games.

    Let's Read Daggerheart +

Page 296 talks a little bit about how to reflavor magic as tech, but it doesn't actually discuss how that might impact the narrative when Fear comes up or similar. Although now that I look for it, I don't actually see an explicit discussion about how to interpret rolls with narrative in mind...

D&D 5E (2024) Psionics: What Do You Want?

Effects based systems have been around for most of the life of the hobby and in all that time D&D has obstinately refused to get on board.

    Let's Read Daggerheart +

On Flavoring/Reskinning: pg 12 These two paragraphs make it clear that as long as the mechanics do not change, players and GMs can "skin" their equipment and abilities however they like. Obviously, there should be some discussions at the table during Session 0 to make sure everyone is on the...

It has been mentioned constantly in the lead up videos, and is prominently spotlighted in the actual book.

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

You asked "what is a narrative mechanic?" Frankly, given what I wrote in the OP, it felt like a disingenuous question. I chose not to address it. If it wasn't disingenuous, I apologize. I assume by now you have gathered the meaning since you are obviously still following the thread.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I started a Let's Read thread before I saw this one. I don't think it is in conflict because that thread is meant to focus specifically on the text and what we can glean as we read.

    Let's Read Daggerheart +

I think it is worth starting a Daggerheart thread that is less about people's excitement (or lack thereof) and plans, but rather actually reading the book (and cards and additional materials) and discussing it specifically in context of the text. I don't want to do this as a rigid thing though...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

I definitely did not do a good job of explaining my thesis, with the amount of responses that seem to be talking about auto success and failure and crits.

    Daggerheart has been Officially Released

I'm not sure crunchy bits and narrative tools are inherently in conflict. The bigger conflict would be a bunch of prescribed DCs for tasks and rigid reward systems that undermine natural flow. Daggerheart doesn't have those.

    Video Games You Wish Existed

On the subject of CRPGs, I would love a modern Freedom Force. Capes isn't bad, buy doesn't quite scratch the itch.
