D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

People who -haven't- experienced bad things are in danger of becoming evil. Bigotry doesn't require someone from a minority group doing something bad to become a part of a person, for example. Making a special note about people with trauma and neurodivergences like manic depression is...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

There is a problem in saying "People who have experienced bad things are in danger of becoming evil." Only perfect in that it is perfectly good. Because there is no evil. In a society where there is only good and neutrality there would be abundant kindess and support. Also our cultural...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

... So I feel like this is a HUGELY problematic statement, and I'm not equipped to unpack that so let's just throw out the suitcase. So let's touch on this one: 1) Why is there a fine? What good does a fine do for anyone? What good does punishing the builder do? Or is it just because we've...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

Now imagine that weak state -without- an evil minority. In fact, imagine -no- evil anywhere on the planet except in movies and stories. Imagine everyone is kind and caring and not striving to gain at the expense of everyone else. How long would it take before we "Forget" what evil looks like...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

Okay. Sure. It's "Good becomes evil" but it's generally presented as "The LG people in charge FORCE everyone to be good, which is bad!" type stuff or other variations on the song. This is that, but acknowledging that they 'become' evil. It's still "The goodest gods and people will be the new...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

We have actually seen this repeated, many times, in the thread. I call it "Good is secretly evil" because it relies on the idea that alllll the forces of good and alllll the good people can just stop being good and start being evil once evil is conquered and still be considered "Good, even...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illrigger: Why I hate this class and love what it could have been.

Like a Skeezy Used Car Salesman. Or an Insurance CEO. Or that uncle that always promised to take you to his beach-house he -totally- has on Honolulu. Rogue doesn't mean "Thief" except in the context of D&D. (Though Used Car Salesman is sometimes fairly close)

I would like to note: Rogue doesn't mean "Thief". It means "Dishonest or Unprincipled Person". Synonymous with Scoundrel, Reprobate, Rascal. D&D is what made rogue into thief.

D&D 5E (2014) Request for Warlock feature suggestions!

Curses. Give them a limited use feature to put curses on their enemies they hit with their eldritch blast or whatever. Could delve into every Magic Item book out there for different "Degrees" of curses to apply and let your warlock pick a few from a list. Could even add an "Extra Curse"...

First of all, Paul is right: Second of all: You can make the level 1 feature of most archetypes into a Ribbon. Warlocks in 2014 were balanced around getting their patron at level 1. Which is why it was a mostly ribbon feature (Temp HP on a killing blow, telepathy, point blank charm/fear) with...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illrigger: Why I hate this class and love what it could have been.

I could do Varlet, maybe? Though its connection to Valet, historically speaking, is really pronounced. Blackguard would also work, of course, as a callback to the 3e Prestige class without being an explicit update. Either would definitely be better than a Skamelar (Parasite, Scrounger) or a...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

THIS is the one that always gets me when it comes to evil characters in fantasy settings: They KNOW they're going to hell. Outright. There's no question about where they're going to and they actively make their choice every day of the week. Can such a person be "Redeemed" and go to heaven...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illrigger: Why I hate this class and love what it could have been.

I mean... Pathfinder's Hell Knights are a specific narrative structure within Golarion rather than a full character class, for one thing. Even the implementation they had in the campaign setting was as a Prestige Class. I'm not even suggesting using those, I'm suggesting that the Illrigger...

Pathfinder also has Wizards and Sorcerers and Barbarians and Monks and... Just 'cause Pathfinder has it doesn't mean D&D can't have it! Also gives me some fun design space since in my version I'm modifying some of the invocations of a Warlock for use by the Knave.

D&D 5E (2014) Is Intimidate the worse skill in the game?

Sometimes that can be fun! Especially when running a game for kids who try to make friends with EVERYONE and then walk into town with a small army of monsters.

Glad I went for Curses, then! And yeah, I think it's the Profane Soul, right? Solid name, there! Maybe, yeah. Nine different evil oaths. But, then, you miss out on some of the more interesting class ability concepts like Seals in place of spellcasting. Though they also could've gone for the old...

That's a really good point. Matt Coville did not come up with the name for the class, he just looked back to a class from an earlier time. Still a terrible name. So is interdict, and the seals and stuff. It could be better than it is, is the main thrust!

It'd make about as much sense, linguistically... "Evil/Sick Rope-Manager/Tool-User". Awful, awful, name. Varlet would've been good. Knave. Malefactor. Lots of good solid words out there.
