D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle Insight in your game?

Similar to @Shadowdweller00 You pick up conversational cues, peculiar omissions, strange wordage, peculiar behaviour, physical changes, concealed emotions, as well as any ideals, bonds and flaws if they work as being revealed in the fiction.

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

I have a similar rationalisation but from the opposite end. Most humans level cap at 9th, something extraordinary needs to happen to the PC in order to exceed 9th level. The bracketed details are things that have occurred in our campaign. - a Chosen by the gods (5e FR storyline) - awashed by...

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

To be frank D&D hasn't matured in some areas, and this thread highlights a very old problem. which is the stark difference of power between levels. The solution should be that Levels should expand versatility while the increase in real power should be represented by Tiers. Then it wouldn't...

    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

I wholeheartedly agree the first situation is uninteresting and indeed terrible. However, for the sake of this discussion, if we can change the second example to something less PC-favouring for comparative purposes. *A player is playing their PC, and they are persuaded/deceived (not charmed) to...

    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

For me at least, I do not want to rely every time on my personal deception skills to try outwit an entire table of friends. Oh I will try, do not get me wrong, I'm happy to use roleplaying skills but I also like that there is an element of a game in this hobby. So, if it comes down to a skill...

    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

Perhaps I'm confusing things here but I'm pretty sure you have taken the opposite position when it comes to the knowledge a character has. As an example, a DM calls you to make a skill check for the PC to see if they are aware that fire is more effective against a troll. In that instance you...

If you had to GM your first game again

I think the very first adventure I DMed was out of TSR's In Search of Adventure and it was either Elwyn's Sanctuary or The Silver Princess (abridged version of Palace of the Silver Princess), I cannot be certain. I was young with no insight into how the game could be played. In terms of what I...

I just checked it is an option in the settings, the person may have inactivated their ability to receive DMs.

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

My issue was the proliferation of hit points with the invention of surges. I capped the hit points at level 6 (I was using HD for shorthand) and the same for monsters depending on their size. It is a variation of the E6 rule. I didn't need to go full E6 because I felt the powers of 4e were more...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

Because of the mad-hit point proliferation my little experience with 4e saw me create a homebrew rule the capping of hit points dependent on size, which is a variation of the E6 rule but only for hit points. So, Small = max 4HD Medium = max 6 HD Large = max 10 HD Huge = max 18 HD Etc... But one...

Mapping the Town - What should a Fantasy Town look like?

Well I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned it and thus you have already dealt with this issue but I do not find both of those to be towns. Clearly Orkast is a town, the Triboar settlement appears to be a village or hamlet IMO. A village or hamlet would likely have a low-wall if any, a...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Makes 5E "5E"?

Advantage/Disadvantage Bounded Accuracy Concentration But what distinguishes it from say 3e (along with the above) is the simpler combat system. 3.x. has more fiddly bits in combat, IMO. I can change 5e to use a skill points system like 3.x, it will still be 5e. I can change 3.x to use...

Streaming services, which do you have or are you getting rid of?

Netflix and a local based streaming service that has deals with HBO and some other international networks. Used to have Prime but changed bank account numbers around a year ago and never updated the debit order details for Prime so I lost it. But I find I'm not missing it - as I mostly watch...

    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

That is fair. There is that element. DMG Page 259 Most relatively mundane effects impose short-term madness, which lasts for just a few minutes. I kinda explained my reasoning in my reply in post #1333 If one can work around a friend's limitations for everyone to have fun, one generally does...

    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

I agree with 1. I'm not so sure about 2. For me it's not pointless (as GM) to have rules which encourage or may steer play in a direction that would otherwise be predictable (less fun) at the table based on a player's limited roleplaying capabilities in a specific area of a character.

    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

Because He is a dear friend; AND He accepts mechanics that constrain his natural playstyle tendencies. Roleplaying Game EDIT: He is creative, but his creative energy flows predominantly towards self-power. :ROFLMAO: But like I said he is very accepting of mechanics which would constrain him*...
