D&D 5E (2024) What old monsters should return to 5e?

As a huge monster fan... all of them. Yes, horrifying creatures like the dharculus; the scalamagdrion; the penanggalan; the gibberling (and its offshoot, the brood gibberling); but also things like the bunyip; the odopi; the corpse collector; and even sillier monsters, like the the adherer. The...

D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

Even though I haven't run or played it, and large parts of it aren't to my taste, I think Wild Beyond the Witchlight is destined to be a classic, if nothing else by virtue of how much of the new style of play it tries to enable.

    Top Ten I, Claudius Characters

I haven't seen it in forever, so I can't really say who my favorites were. But the show, and the period in Roman history it depicts, and the various characters in it, are awesome.

    D&D 5E (2024) Removing Concentration

You could shift the burden so that the target has to maintain concentration on the buff instead of the caster.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 MM - Winners and Losers

They really aren't. They've been around since 1e and have appeared in multiple settings in pretty much every edition. I'm not interested in setting books for the most part. Putting setting-agnostic monsters in a setting book as a hook to get me to buy it just makes me resentful. It's a terrible...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

This would be better than the wholesale removal of maedar from the lore! That said, given the prevalence of sexual dimorphism in the real world, I would love to see examples of it in monsters. But 5e is seemingly terrified of anything that might get the "sexist" label, so... no more androsphinx...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

I'm not a big fan of the new marilith look. But I don't think WotC is afraid of depicting sexy women monsters. What I do think they're afraid of is any hint of sexual dimorphism. If any monster gave them the opportunity for an interesting "males are one way and females are another way" take...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 MM - Winners and Losers

The answer is to bring back a variety of magic item phylacteries as well, so that it's not used exclusively for evil monsters. IMHO.

What are you reading in 2025?

I just finished My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry, by Fredrick Backman. It was fantastic. A quick read, suitable for younger readers while not being annoying in the way that a lot of young adult fiction can sometimes be, and very moving. I'd recommend it to anyone. I have never...

D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasting Monsters, Spell Slotlessness, Bonus Actions, and Intent

On the other hand, 5e (2014) has downtime rules, and I have run and/or played in games that passed years in downtime. So I guess if you can get the party to buy in to the idea of taking ten years off....

D&D General Honey, I shrunk the party!

I reduced the party to microscopic size back in 2e. There was an old issue of Dragon that had stats for all kinds of microscopic monsters, and I used the heck out of it. Eventually, they got restored to normal size. It was pretty fun. Haven't done it in any other editions, and I don't have...

D&D General What would a Semanticore do?

As long as nobody uses bad grammar, it's friendly, but the first person to trigger it is in trouble.

D&D General Feats are in. What is the current feel about multiclassing?

Fairly common, some do, some don't. Any combination. I've seen pcs with up to, I think, four classes. I've seen pcs who dipped a level or two in one class and were otherwise single classed. I've seen pcs with fairly even splits of levels and I've seen pcs with wide disparities. It's all good to me.

    Dice etiquette, rules, and superstitions

If it rolls off your rolling surface, it doesn't count. The cat rolled, not you. Doesn't count. Not your fault. Roll a new die. Don't care. I don't like them personally, but don't mind if other people use them as long as they don't unduly slow down play. Absolutely not. Roll some damn dice...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Ah, I never saw Stormlord's Keep- it must have been in one of the few 3e era Dungeon issues that I missed. As for Mongoose's Drow War, I was only counting WotC material; I'm sure there might have been any number of third party epic things that I never saw.

D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasting Monsters, Spell Slotlessness, Bonus Actions, and Intent

Looking over the new Monster Manual, I have noticed that a lot of monsters have both spellcasting as an action and some spellcasting options as a bonus action. Given that monsters don't use spell slots, is the intent that a (f'rexample) cultist fanatic is able to cast spiritual weapon (as a...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I feel like published adventures are what (or should) show a DM how to use all the tools they're provided with- for example, a good high level adventure should show how to incorporate high level pc abilities in it. It should assume and require that they have high level resources to navigate the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

There were some high level monsters in the books, especially later books; but there were very few high level adventures for 3e. (Of course, there weren't many adventures at any level, but that's another thing.) And like I said, there was never a published epic level adventure, except for a...
