    General video game discussion

I Don't Do Steam. That said, everything on my wishlist is on sale on GOG, but I've firmly told myself a sale has to be pretty steep before I'm buying anything new until I do a serious attack on my backlog.

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

I've commented before that complicating their lives when avoidable is something a lot of people consider not-fun.

    Optimization and optimizers...

I don't entirely disagree, but class systems are not notorious for making it easy to branch out.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Something not too far from that was part of the plot of the most recent season of For All Mankind.

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

Yup. There's a whole other can of worms you open when taking prisoners, and its one that's easy for a GM to mishandle.

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

Some of its that, but even in games that don't really work that way its often more "These guys will just come back with friends/join up with the guys we need to fight later." Defeat-in-detail has a strong historical presence in warfare for a reason, after all.

I know you're not disagreeing, but I've definitely seen the other though; when we started playing D&D 4e, my wife wanted to build an effective ranger-archer, and took advice from our most notorious local power gamer. It worked (it was a somewhat notorious power build in the 4e community), but...

    Optimization and optimizers...

This is one of those things that can land on the rocks of different expectations in both directions. On one hand the "if your character isn't built to my satisfaction you're not holding up your end" is rightly seen as a jerk move. On the other the "Because you want your character to fit your...

    Optimization and optimizers...

Though I'll note there are kind of hardcore gamists groups where its not only accepted, its expected (of course usually in those the player who should have done half damage would snitch on themself). Like I said, I've seen the other, but it isn't in a "I'm trying to push down person X so I can...

That's far narrower than a lot of people using the term mean by it.

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

As I've noted, the big problem there is a lot of players have been taught to not let opponents retreat, and often the same systemic features that make it hard for PCs to do so aren't always better when its NPCs.

    Show your game prep notes

Exactly that, in fact, though I don't usually have a huge amount of end-session notes; generally just Icon related requests and reminders to myself to do various bookkeeping things. Usually I put it in red so its hard to miss. I often use blue for encounter header summaries so they're easy to...

    Optimization and optimizers...

As I noted earlier, there's matters of degree here; its entirely possible to think you don't care someone has a bit more oomph, but not expect them to be essentially turning themselves into the Main Character and you into a spear-carrier. Often people who are not naturally inclined toward...

    Optimization and optimizers...

Absolutely, but I've seen this enough to have what seems at least adequate evidence it isn't just me, either. I mean, just look at a number of other posts in this thread.

    Optimization and optimizers...

You'd think, but it doesn't always work that way. Among other things, they can go into it thinking they're going to be contributing adequately, and then in play, find out otherwise. I'm not going to speak of 5e, because I'm not qualified. But I will say that, for examples, it was entirely...

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

True, but he needs to make it clear that he's houseruling that upfront; players aren't going to just assume it.

    RPG Sales of 2025

Its a great bundle. Unfortunately I already have pretty much everything I'd want out of it.

    Optimization and optimizers...

Well, its based on the fact that even people who aren't oriented toward optimization want to feel like they're contributing. If some people are clearly doing so too much more, that can feel like its not the case and, well, bad. My own feeling is that the game has to have a bit too much of a...

    Optimization and optimizers...

The PF2e games I've played in says you're wrong. And this is, at best, a gross overgeneralization. There are plenty of optimizers who are all about realizing the concept they have to the best degree the system will allow them to, and that concept includes being capable in their area. That's...

    Optimization and optimizers...

You can also have games where the gap is less pronounced because the character generation makes it difficult to produce a character that's really substandard, and where an optimized character isn't dramatically more potent than an average one. Both of those are generally true with PF2e (you...
