    Who was right

Well, for what it's worth, I play a very nice paladin tabletop. I paid my OWN money to liberate slaves. Of course, we then went and massacred the (illegal) slavers, so it was more of an investment than expenditure. Our group regularly loans each other money when someone wants something they...

Your role? Nothing matters but combat.

It is not wrong to focus the game more on combat, no. It's a perfectly valid approach. However, I don't think there is any clear evidence 4e is actually doing this. They have claimed that they aren't, and their claims make it sound, if anything, 4e will support noncombat better. I don't agree...

Your role? Nothing matters but combat.

From preview material, 4e is apparently going to expand and better-support a vast array of non-combat approaches to resolving conflict, and not force anyone to choose between combat and noncombat roles. Instead, folks will have a variety of combat roles, and then a variety of noncombat roles...

Completely right, Plane Sailing. My apologies.

    Cloak of Mage Armor

From the peanut gallery, I'd point out that 'can't have other armor enhancements' is a somewhat minimal restriction. Among other things, in the games I've been in, few people ever bother with enhancements other than a simple bonus.

    Who was right

I'd also point out that unless the opponent has a really cool 'extra sundering' attack, sundering a shield is a pretty limited/daft thing for NPCs to do, which further bolsters me 'DM is being a weasel' comment. I mean, PCs rarely sunder shields. First of all, it's HARD. Second of all, you've...

    Who was right

Some observations: Moff comes across as a weasel and a jerk. Anyone who disagrees with him is GREEDY, and he's completely unwilling to see things from other points of view. His DM comes across as a weasel and a jerk. If you don't like someone having high AC? Ask them to focus elsewhere...

    Gestalting

The TT campaign I'm in is gestalt. No psionics, though. We have: Me, Paladin-fighter/Monte Cook Variant Bard. Got a pass on alignment because we agreed that the 'leadership noble bard' made sense. Cha becomes a key stat that works very well; at 10th level I have +12/+13/+12 saves without...

    MIC - Forehead palm

I was going to argue Corsair's point but then I thought about it... while my party has a bunch of random stuff (boots of speed, cloak of arachnida, slippers of spiderclimb), most of our money is spent on the 'big stuff': every AC buff (spread out), stat bonuses, cloak of resistance. And healing...

    Cloak of Mage Armor

Sometimes the only way to win the game is not to play.

Would this be using Bluff or Diplomacy?

roguerouge: Wants to believe you? Have you been married? :) I'd argue diplomacy should apply if you have time to talk it over, bluff if you have to look really earnest RIGHT NOW. More seriously, I think diplomacy applies; diplomacy is used to make people look upon you favorably. The fact that...

Why is Polar Ray an 8th level spell?

If there was a 'sudden split ray,' polar ray would rock on toast... ;) Are there any 6th level or lower single-target ray spells? Hmm. (You know, split ray - ray of enfeeblement isn't a bad idea...)

    D&D 3.x Questions about 3.5 Wild Shape

You know, it occurs to me that clothing with beastskin enchant might be a great way to serve as a foundation for enchants that work in wildshape. Consider: +1 beastskin robes, total AC: +1, 9000 gp Put monk's belt 'in' the robes. 22400, +4500 (because original enchant is now +50% for multiple...

Why is Polar Ray an 8th level spell?

Well, quicken is cheating slightly; it's 2 spells. Though when you're casting 6th level spells, I suppose 2nd level is no biggie. For more fun, consider Twin Spell - scorching ray (6th) + Quicken spell - Scorching ray (6th). 36d6 damage. ;)

    Cloak of Mage Armor

You know, as an aside, it's kind of interesting that bracers of armor provide an armor bonus and not an enhancement to armor bonus. Presumably, a mage with a cleric friend could have bracers of armor and then add magic vestment on TOP. Maybe make some sort of spellswap deal. ;) 'You cast that...

    Cloak of Mage Armor

Because you end up with an item that is much cheaper than an existing item that does the same thing, with fewer drawbacks. Which makes no sense. It also violates the guideline of using the best pre-existing fit for a particular item. Bracers of armor are a core item. They are priced correctly...

    Cloak of Mage Armor

It is a comment about the usefulness of tossing guidelines out the window. More on point: You state, categorically, that bracers of armor are 'absurdly overpriced.' Your only defense of this point is that 'you can cast mage armor and it lasts so long' and connecting that to magic item creation...

Why is Polar Ray an 8th level spell?

Polar ray + sudden maximize + energy substitution sounds like a pretty solid candidate for high level blasting.
