AOO's have to go, or be changed

You know, I like AoOs, but these are good points about paralized folks. I'm inclined to houserule an allowance to use AoOs to strike inanimate/helpless foes, but use the 'only one AoO per target per reason' to prevent the odd Combat Reflexes demon from causing trouble. Because, hey, if you are...

    Fluff vs Crunch

Yes. We're not demanding that all wizards be named 'Wizardwhosreallygoodatlightningspells Veryfast Andhasacutedaughter' or something.

What should WOTC do about Golden Wyvern Adept? (Keep Friendly)

My experience with husbands and wives getting into the hobby is that this is a terrible, terrible miscalculation. I hope either they realize this or that I'm completely wrong.

D&D 4E Would you buy and play a new campaign setting for 4e?

I voted the last, but to be fair I NEVER buy setting books, since I don't use other folks' settings. My sole interest in a setting book is new material that I can use.

    For the first time... apprehension

Not to derail too much, but I think the biggest flaw with PrCs was the common design idea of 'hard to get into -> extra powerful.' A lot of people designed that way; personally, I think it horribly abused and broke the system. Then there were the many prestige classes designed in such a way...

    For the first time... apprehension

I appreciate that very much, Hopeless. My perspective: There are things to learn from every style of gaming, from boardgames to poker. For instance, I use various 'hands-on' methods to make tracking stuff easier for players. Like 'my buff lasts for 4 rounds' "Ok, take out a die and put it with...

    Fluff vs Crunch

John Snow: So 'Golden Wyvern Adept' means 'purity strength and finesse/skill.' Which would suggest something along the lines of 'metamagic substitution: Holy' or 'extra critical damage on spells' or 'bonus on strength checks.' That it means 'selective AoE targetting' isn't obvious at all...

    For the first time... apprehension

PhantomNarrator. I'm a gamer in my thirties, have enjoyed RPGs for most of my life and enjoy MMOs. I'm trying to think of a polite way to respond to you basically calling me a :):):):)ing idiot.

    Fluff vs Crunch

Again, like a lot of people have pointed out, having a proper noun when you expect a proper noun is, um, proper. Like for a class, a tradition, and so on. Having a proper noun for a class feature gets in the way and is not expected (at least so far). EN World is also rather singular, rather...

    D&D 4E Monte Cook on 4E

For me, the big win will be if 4e honestly and truly offers a lot of what I've come to like in 3.5e, but simpler. If it does anything else, I doubt I'll jump on board; if it's just as complex but a different set of rules, then I'm ... well, I won't say 'not interested,' but it's a black mark...

What should WOTC do about Golden Wyvern Adept? (Keep Friendly)

Proper noun names for things are not going to work well for a lot of newcomers to the hobby. At all. I have a group full of them. They can barely remember what 'power attack' does. Secondly... hold up... Golden Wyvern is a defined term for 'collection of abilities frequently possessed by...

What should WOTC do about Golden Wyvern Adept? (Keep Friendly)

Purple Dragon Knights don't have abilities like 'purple dragonning.' They have 'heroic shield,' which boosts Aid Another for AC. That makes sense... shield, AC. 'Rallying cry,' a morale bonus to attacks and speed increase to allies. Again, the term and result make sense. Inspire courage, Fear...

Effects lasting until the end of the encounter, w00t!

Yeah, I just had a combat last night where we had my bardic song lasting 5 rounds, someone else's buff lasting 10 rounds, another spell that had been cast earlier so had 8 rounds left to go. And one of the enemies threw in an area dispel, so each of us got to roll to see which dropped...

Have "cross-class" skill deliniations finally been removed?

As an example, I am a very poor illustrator. But I took a night class for fun. After ONE hour, what I was capable of drawing was ASTOUNDINGLY better; looking at the 'before' and 'after' looked like two different folks had done them. I view that 1 rank to go from 'untrained' to 'trained' as...

What should WOTC do about Golden Wyvern Adept? (Keep Friendly)

My heart sank at what you said. For what it's worth. I'm still taking a wait and see attitude, and am generally expecting to like 4e, but this is one area I'll probably end up having troubles with down the line. The problem, as I see it, is the mechanical issue of 'how obvious is this term?' I...

Have "cross-class" skill deliniations finally been removed?

Heh, thanks, Delericho; every time a forum poster says 'I was wrong, sorry' an angel gets its wings! :) Upon reflection, it strikes me that the difficulty modifier for 'next to impossible' (I think it's +10 DC, but perhaps should be higher) would be appropriate for 'attempting to use...

    Fluff vs Crunch

Personally, I don't care about fluff at all; I never play in established worlds, so changes to them don't bother me in the least. My interest is solely in 'what cool elements can I use,' like war-forged. But I understand other people really like established fluff. Cool. As an aside, GWA makes...

Have "cross-class" skill deliniations finally been removed?

Delericho, always remember to check when you say someone is wrong. ;) Tracking is here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#track To whit: Normal Without this feat, you can use the Survival skill to find tracks, but you can follow them only if the DC for the task is 10 or lower. So, yes...

What should WOTC do about Golden Wyvern Adept? (Keep Friendly)

Necromancy at least is close. I mean, if I have a spell called 'Devan's Gyre' which causes targets to spin uncontrollably, that's suggestive. If I have a feat called 'dance of the monkey' which gives me some sort of dodge bonus, that's not hard to remember. If the skill 'Pancakes' is used to...

What should WOTC do about Golden Wyvern Adept? (Keep Friendly)

For me? Borderline; at least 'iron sigil' suggests durability/toughness. 'Iron Ward Master' would work better, imo.
