What would you do - xp award

Re: 'Giving it out equally encourages players not to take risks.' What, are the players children? If someone is being a putz and not putting in risks because they don't get the cookie, punch them in the head and tell them to stop being a wanker. I like XP as game pacing, and as a spice to...

This "resting at 9:05 AM" business

Brother, you'd have me with the mythic tradition angle, except none of the examples cast five fireballs daily. I agree completely that those are interesting and intriguing magical examples to use, but D&D doesn't do them at all. I suppose my problem is that there are three ideas that work for...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

You know, it's far too late, but this would have been an EXCELLENT approach to Scarred Lands. The setting always struggled with the premise of a fairly low, magic-poor world, but was D&D, with all the high-level goofiness that entails.

    Abstract Gear Handling

I did that for a while. The one part that was a little weird was figuring out how to handle potions and other 'used up' stuff. Eventually I decided to calculate potions as 'use per week' items, with the hand-wave that potions were essentially restocked roughly once a week.

Monte Cook's HP House Rule: Health & Grace

I always like my idea... if HP represent luck and fortune and so on, let's make it based on Cha! Imagine the howls.

This "resting at 9:05 AM" business

Actually, the biggest culprit for the nova problem (great term!) in my experience are clerics. Give them time, and they'll blow half their spells on buffs and storm through combat. Then feel absolutely pathetic thereafter and grouse about resting. Yes, they are told to be more careful, the...

    Druids and Multiattack

Yeah, I kinda meant (but didn't actually SAY) that 'Any feat you sometimes qualify for, you can take; but can only use when you have prereqs) Consider the idea clarified!

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

In my games, what typically happens is I have occasional comments like 'you get ambushed about 4 days in by a bunch of yokels. You kick their asses and keep moving.' Or actually play it out, if it's a little closer, and have the highwaymen surrender when they realize how absolutely boned they...

    Druids and Multiattack

I think the RAW doesn't allow druids to have Multiattack. On the other hand, I think it makes sense that they SHOULD get it, and I really like the idea of 'you can take any feat, only works when prereqs met.'

Vow of Poverty and a 'party' Cure wand

Me, in those situations, I'd say the benefits of VoP are lost until the character has Atonement cast upon him. And, if it was breaking a vow for a really really good reason, the Atonement would be something pretty simple: "For your violation of the precepts of your Vow, you must take this...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

You know, with considerations of race lately, I realized that E6 makes Sleep a bit more useful, and, thus, elves' immunity to it.

Man. With 10 feats, you could actually be a decent mounted warrior without having to cut things to the bone.

This "resting at 9:05 AM" business

I think my problem with spells is that 'we've run out of spells' sounds like such a weird, stupid reason to stop and rest compared to, say, 'we're seriously hurt/exhausted and need some downtime.' I realize that, strategically, they amount to the same thing. But it just doesn't FEEL right to...

    capping D&D at 5th level?

I'll point out that bull fighters cheat like dogs. You have picadors poke holes in the bull and, the minute the bull glances their way, they run and hide behind walls. Once the bull is poked and bleeding for a while, bleery from exhaustion, THEN mr. prancy pants steps out and does a finishing...

    Gestalt monsters

It also solves the same issue players often face; how useful is a ogre magi, if he's ogre 10/wiz 2 (or something)? The MM idea of fractional CR for 'secondary' levels is really clunky. If the PCs are also gestalt, I think you're fine. If they aren't, I'd add 1 CR per 5 HD or so.

This "resting at 9:05 AM" business

This has been a problem in games I've been in, to varying degree. We've had situations where there's been a real difficult choice... 'We have to save the kids, time may be a factor. But we have almost no spells, so we aren't going to have a shot at saving the kids. Nnngh. Ok, we rest.' One...

    Align this character.

Quick alignment reference: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/description.htm#alignment Loyalty to friends is actually pretty Neutral; on the one hand, it's lawful because you are honorable and trustworthy, on the other hand it's chaotic because you favor them over society's rules and obligations. So...

    Align this character.

I dunno if I really consider that a Lawful-level plan. I mean, if I go around killing people because I want fear and respect, am I lawful? Not really... it's just some wacky idea I got in my head.

    Align this character.

I confess to a great curiousity as to how someone in a D&D setting sterilizes other people. My guess is either this wasn't D&D, or the OP is being cute and using a RL person like Goering. I also note that part of my judgement of CE is reading between the lines; someone with a really...
