D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss- Post your pre-set encounters *Spoilers*

I *love* this. I will definitely use this. You have inspired me. I will use the same ledge set up, but the 'ambush' is waiting for them as they get off the ledge. The first PC will be outnumbered and unable t move far (assuming tied together), as more PCs come off the ledge the sides will get...

    D&D 5E (2014) Advantage/Disadvantage - Common or Special?

I think part of the problem is how each person is defining 'common' 'easy' 'exceptional' etc. For some folks, running 3 times a week is 'easy', or others its 'exceptional'. A is for a single subclass that only gets it for one round and only *if* it wins initiative. C is for no rules give...

    D&D 5E (2014) Advantage/Disadvantage - Common or Special?

The more restrictions you need to put... the obvious it becomes that is it not 'common'. 1) Be a ranger 2) Be a Beastmaster Ranger 3) Be a halfing 4) Pick your campanion to be a 'mount' 5) Spend one of your feats to get mounted combat and then BAM... you get advantage on *small* creatures...

    Encounters Confusion

I think we have been confusing 'entry level' or 'introduction' as 'boring and linear'. Yes a straight dungeon craw is pretty direct....but its also really linear. I refuse to accept that a 'new person' can only handle going from Room One down the hall to Room Two. If you walk up to anyone on...

    Encounters Confusion

Ah.... that was (IMO) a big and important mistake. These 'work details' are the best way for PCs to gather intel and scrounge gear. For example, one of my players was doing scut work in the kitchen and managed to steal a fork. Back in the cave they manages to modify as improvised lock picks...

The Angry GM on D&D Encounters

I disagree that OotA is bad for new players. I have found it is only the *experienced* players that balk at losing their gear or not having all their normal options present. New players don't know what is 'normal' and thus adapt just fine. Everyone is familiar with the 'jailbreak' trope and...

DM rewards for running Adventurer's League - what are your thoughts?

Yeah, but.... I call BS. I bet most of those same people would not want to DM even if it didn't put them behind schedule. It is a very selfish reason, and one that is easy to address. Explain that this is a volunteer organization, and will not work correctly without an appropriate number of...

11 ways to be a better roleplayer - does this apply to the AL?

    12. Don't embed and entire article when you could just link to it. I think all 12 of those are good ideas for AL players.

    D&D 5E (2014) Huh... I've reviewed over 50 adventures for 5E!

WOW! I had *no* idea there were that many 5E adventures available. Granted I"m doing AL, so I haven't been paying close attention, but I would have guessed more like 30+ not 100+ Glad to have a 'review resource' I can use once I do start needing them.

Out of the Abyss: Gracklstugh Encounter Map

Holy Crap!! I am running on the AL PDF for now, so have not read that chapter.... man it seems convoluted. Your encounter map makes almost no sense to me now, but it sure seems like it will be *very* valuable to me later. Thanks for doing this.

    D&D 5E (2014) [Out of the Abyss]Magic item distribution?

which 'that level'? they will be traversing the Underdark through 7th level.... just have them run into that Tomb near the end.

D&D 5E (2014) DMG's definition of "Deadly" is much less deadly than mine: Data Aggregation?

The DMG guidelines seem okay, once you change the names from Easy-Medium-Hard-Deadly to a more realistic Trivial-Easy-Medium-Hard. If you want a Deadly, increase the current deadly by 50-100%. Of course, part of the problem might be the 'adventure day'. If you really do have 8 encounters in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is stoneskin underpowered?

OTOH, take 30 hp of damage before losing conc, and its still better than healing potions. And it also means you have to take 44 points of damage before your Conc test is >10. With Res Con or Warcaster, a DC 10 test is pretty easy to pass, and those are fairly common feats.

D&D 5E (2014) DMing "Out of the Abyss"

I'm pretty sure my players would have let each other die, in order to save Stool....

D&D 5E (2014) DMing "Out of the Abyss"

D&D 5E (2014) Small tweaks to improve Out of the Abyss [DMs toolbox; SPOILERS]

I made up an interesting terrain feature. They were traveling in a 7-8' wide passage when they got attacked by Roctopuses coming out of some crevises. This way they could be 2 abreast to fight, but only if one of them would "Squeeze" and fight at disadvantage. It let them be clever and have...

D&D 5E (2014) Small tweaks to improve Out of the Abyss [DMs toolbox; SPOILERS]

As for Ilvara..... I think you can do both. If the PCs have been putting effort into moving fast, hiding tracks, etc. Then the only chance the (now obsessed) Ilvara has is to guess where the PCs are going is to guess which town they are heading towards to get out....then get there first...

D&D Expeditions: Rage of Demons (spoilers!)

Would these be better in separate threads?
  19. C

    Encounters Confusion

For the general question, I think Expeditions are a much easier intro, because the tend to have very little 'story' involved, and the research tends to be pretty linear and easy. Its just enough to get you from one combat to the next. It feels more like a CRPG that way. Encounters is a more...

D&D 5E (2014) Help with Elf Archer build

Ranger(Hunter)5/Rogue(Assassin)5 Expertise in stealth and Perception. Grab Sharpshooter when you can, ignore Crossbow expert. You will be doing a ton of damage, excellent mobiity, Hiding, etc. etc. After that, either more Rogue, or FIghter(BM) 3 then more rogue.
