Learn about D&D organized play options

I completely understand tying the expeditions to the stores. The store does cool things for WotC, WotC does cool things for the stores.

D&D 5E (2014) Kicking off "Out of the Abyss" - Seeking Opinions [MINOR SPOILERS]

One idea I am contemplating: Let them escape without getting into the armory, so will very little gear. They get chased but have a few encounters along the way. Then they get caught and brought back. Now the are 2nd level.... next time they break out they are tough enough to deal with the...

[UPDATED] Out of the Abyss Reviews Have Started Rolling In

I find all of these glowing reviews kinda funny.... I really like the adventure, and it really does make a great sourcebook. (almost a better sourcebook than adventure) But there are some issues.... but mostly ones that don't become apparent until you are getting nitty-gritty and prepping to...

D&D 5E (2014) Mummy Lord Whirlwind vs Wind Wall and is this a TPK?

Who cares about the sorcerer? You have a cleric and *two* paladins. Turn undead should get about 3/4 of the regular mummies A paladin can hit twice for weapons damage and +11D8 Smite damage. Plus any smite spells he may cast. Heck a single paladin can almost take out a Mummy Lord in a single...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command

Can you provide a rule for that assertion? There is nothing in the rules that dictates that every failure is just like every other failure, nor every success just like every other success. In fact, there are examples where rolling particularly high or low *does* have different effects. There...

D&D 5E (2014) Players Companion pdf for OotA is out.

I could clearly see his tongue in his cheek..... (The 'Merica was a big clue)

D&D 5E (2014) XP Per Adventuring Day Per Player is Ridiculous

If I were running a home campaign, I think I would give out 1/2 XP. I think the current values just level characters way too fast. Of course, I would also require a full 24hrs of rest to recoup all hit points.

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss in my grubby hands (pic attached)

DnD Organized Play (Adventure League) gives out Certificates for magic items. So when we get the adventure, we get a stack of certificates, one for each magic item.

D&D 5E (2014) Kender as an appropriate race

I played a kender for close to 2 years... played him as written, and it was not a problem. He stole all sorts of things from PCs, and he thought locks were purposely put in place only to 'challenge' folks. I used to 'find' all sorts of things, including gems and money. OTOH, Kender also don't...

The 'encounter' certs and 'expedition' certs are delivered differently. I am talking about OotA certs....

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss in my grubby hands (pic attached)

Based on the "Encounters" version of the beginning, and the stack of magic item certificates.... there seems to be plenty of magic items. Now this is just based on my impression, I haven't done a mathematical assessment....

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules Question: Sniping & Readied Action

Um.... that is actually exactly the opposite. Reactions happen *after* the triggering event; There are some exceptions, but they are explicitly stated as exceptions.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules Question: Sniping & Readied Action

Also, this assumes the PCs were not surprised by the goblins. If they knew they were up there and beat them on initiative, they could move to get more cover or a better angle, and they should get a perception check, if they succeed they can shoot.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules Question: Sniping & Readied Action

Not necessarily, they are just not hidden anymore. But they may not be visible...for example, they may be in heavy shadow. True, but why would a goblin move that far, and why into bright light? This makes no sense. What about shooting from behind a wall, etc. There are just too many...

    D&D 5E (2014) When to Roll Initiative

If the Assassin has set things up well, then I might give him Advantage on the Dex Check for Initiative. Make sense to me, and helps with the Assassinate Feature.

Mostly DMing, but for Expeditions I will be doing a Monk.... so might as well go RoD and pick up an interesting Bond or Background or such.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rogue Stealth in Battle

I have not tried it yet, but one variant I thought of is to use the Passive check allow you to notice something, which triggers the active check. So, walking down the passage, if your passive check beats the DC of the hidden trap.... you get to roll your perception to see if you notice it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

One way I deal with this, is to give the assassin advantage on his Initiative check if I think it is warranted.
