D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Tells you nothing of the sort. You are assuming and putting words in people's mouths. A year to get to level 4, if meeting weekly, is about 15 sessions per level. I don't care how much I love the moment-by-moment play, I'm going to get bored if I don't get ANY new tricks that I can pull in 15...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Funny side-tangent. No one knows precisely why women's clothing stopped having pockets (it used to!) but one very popular theory is that it is because of the French Revolution. Poorer people (men and women) would have purses and similiar items to carry their things. Only the noble women had...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

To bolster your statement somewhat. I prefer to start at level 3. I have had many players express shock over that, and seek to confirm, because... shouldn't we start at level 1 which is the first level instead of "skipping" to higher levels. I had a game recently started where we put that...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Perhaps not an answer to the "most" people, but I will throw my own anecdote into the hat. I actually spent a good most of a year trying to get an online game where I could playtest the One DnD Rogue after the Cunning Strikes were revealed. Every game had to start at level 1. Most died there...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I think you are reading far too much into the comment. Remember, old school Wizard design was "early levels suck so you can have fun later". I believe Ezekiel was speaking to that design mentality, not towards disparaging low level characters as being unfun inherently. Edit: And it isn't like...

I agree except for the last part. While it is awesome when the player's make crazy moves, you cannot rely on that to be the fun of the game. Not everyone is going to be at 100% creativity at every moment, and a lot of people struggle with impromptu actions. I've had a lot of tables lock up...

That seems more like it should be "Even level 1 should be fun" and less about changing people's expectations for the future.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

No one does it. No game does it. That is the point. Someone upthread essentially said "We don't use any narrative conceits in our game". This is just a point that they obviously MUST use some narrative conceits, because the game would become unbearably dull and painful to play if they did not.

Yes. That is what I said. That is what every single person who agrees with me has said.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I seem to have read quite a few people on this forum over the years who take "a character with a built in motivation" and turn it around as "how dare you try and impose your main character syndrome mary sue upon my narrative-less game world" so.... they seem to have a reason not to do both...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Which would prove what I'm saying And now you are changing the scenario. Now it isn't that there are rumors of something happening that turn out to be false alarms. Now it is you, as the DM, stating that they are either fast forwarding through time or moving to a different location, because...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Right, there would still be wandering monsters to fight. You would not have a situation where NOTHING is happening. Where there is nothing to do, nothing to fight, nothing to explore, nothing to investigate. If you did.... you'd brush past it with a 30 second "and you wasted your time" and move on.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

My point doesn't care how long it takes at the table? But it is interesting that you would choose to fast forward through it with a 30 second explanation rather than play it out like you would other potential plot hooks. Do you take less than 30 seconds for adventures where things happen? I...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

The entirety of the Lord of the Rings is based on heroic decisions. At any point in the story, it is feasible and possible (if we were to consider this a role-playing game) for them to have made a different decision. The fact that they didn't is irrelevant, just like the fact that I chose to...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Intimidate the worse skill in the game?

Adding the word "awe" to the description doesn't do much for me. In the old definition of the word, Awe means terror or dread, usually inspired by something vastly beyond you. A man is in awe of the ocean. But for awe to not be a result of intentionally trying to make someone feel small (like a...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Intimidate the worse skill in the game?

I don't know if that would fix the skill, as much as make it no longer a skill. It could be a solution for that sort of action, but I think it would stop being a skill at that point.

D&D Releases Playtest for Updated Artificer

What I find darkly amusing about all this is how quick people are to make claims. WoTC changed their survey method. They said nothing about why they did so. They said nothing about what they are planning going forward. For all we know this survey method is an experiment to see how it works...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

No it isn't, not if you understand what my point is. The point is that, in the course of playing the game, you are never put in a situation where there is nothing interesting going on. IF your response to that is "well that only happens if the players ignore the interesting things going on"...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

What the heck is an adventure hook if it is not the beginning of a prepared adventure path? Are you thinking it is different because in an prepared path every detail is pre-planned? Because that has nothing to do with an adventure hook at all. But the hook has to LEAD somewhere, down a...
