D&D General There seems to be three types of classes in DND.

New monk is good. my only complaint is that it's the only class without spells or skill bumps.

Yes, because who in their right mind would call the fantasy Martial Arts class... a martial. Who'da thunk?

I'd say the three types of classes are... Pure Martial (Fighter, Monk, etc) Full Spellcaster (Wizard, Cleric, etc) And Mixed (Paladin, etc). You then have Power Source - divine , primal, arcane, tool. This gives us a nice 4x3 spread, with sorcerer or wizard as an outlier.

D&D General I think the choice of Species / Race / Ancestry has more to do with Story than Rules...

I don't think Stat bonuses are species-defining mechanics. Dragonbreath, shapeshifting, flying, smolness and giantism, innate luck... those are fantasy-race defining traits.

D&D General I think the choice of Species / Race / Ancestry has more to do with Story than Rules...

Yes and no. Definitely, the vast majority of players come to the table with a story concept in mind and pick the best mechanics to fit that concept. On the other hand, there's already a tendency to treat all sapients as just "pointy ear humans" or "short humans" or "humans with a tail" etc...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

Yep, that's me saying exactly that, first page, first responce. Just thought I'd see how far the mace influence went. Was mostly a curiosity thing.

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

I mean, "laser cleric" was just a nickname for the Devoted Cleric option in 4e. Just because no one is using that nickname in 5e doesn't mean the heart of the concept (radiance damage blaster) isn't around. Light domain fills that niche nicely, for instance, on top of getting a bunch of fire...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

On a whim, I looked up Final Fantasy white mages. FF1 white mage used hammers. FF2 didn't have jobs. FF3's white mage used "staffs" but check out the concept art. FF4's white mage, Rosa, was an archer - a niche but still used cleric weapon option in D&D. FF5's white mage is like FF3's - used...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

4e laser cleric wasn't popular? Or are you talking about the 5e's knowledge/light/etc clerics?

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

To be fair, clerics aren't really fitting the real world warrior monks definition either. The fundamental difference between a monk and a priest in reality is the former is expected to live an ascetic lifestyle, usually separated from the world as well as worldly pleaures, whereas a priest is...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

Nitpick - Its actually part of their species background, as described in Mordenkainen Book of Foes. They're created directly from the sapient chaos magic. 5e Elves are just old school (2e/3e) Eladrin-as-energy-beings who chose to take physical form, and when they die, return to being those...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Monks are the ONLY class that relies on raw stats for skills. Casters have magic to supplement. Rogue, Ranger, Bard, Artificer have Expertise. Barbarians have Primal Knowledge and Fighters have Tactical Mind. Paladins are the closest to the monk's situation, but they're still half-casters...

    D&D 5E (2024) UA 8 Barbarian Discussion

Do you really expect people to be doing the golf-bag thing? And constantly swap in game? Because that's not how I've seen things work so far. YMMV, and its all anacdotal, but I don't see that happening, so to me that's a false statement. Not to mention, its not really a choice if you do...

Because its evidence that the hand crossbow is an oversight rather than intention and will likely be changed. Its all about enforcing a class role and a class fantasy, really. Otherwise, why bother with any restrictions on weapons at all?

    D&D 5E (2024) UA 8 Barbarian Discussion

I don't care. I could bring up a ton of reasons why this justification isn't good, but frankly, I shouldn't need to. This isn't about a power budget, this is about creating a fun play experience, and waiting til most games are ending to get something that creates a fun play experience but...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Grappling has an odd limitation on a Monk. You can grab someone, but you can't carry them anywhere, as Monks tend to have low Strength, and thus carrying capacity. I'm worried that there's a lot of other hidden qualities in Monk that make it nice in a white room, but less shiny in actual play.

Because, if they wanted ranged monk weapons, they would have kept Simple Ranged Weapons instead of specifying Simple Melee. It seems like its straight jacketing Monk into melee type, no ranged.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Maybe. I ran the numbers and its about ~2.7 extra damage (1d8, avg 4.5, 60% hit chance) on average at level 5, with a trade off in lower AC. Also with the possibility of lower DEX score, which would actually lower your damage from the lower to-hit and extra +1 damage on a hit from four attacks.

Ah, I see. Yes, that's an odd issue.
