D&D 5E (2024) Wither the Wizard? (or: Bards don’t have ACNE)

Feat, absolutely not. I should not have to have a lineage nor feat to fulfill the most basic tropes of a class. I shouldn't be punished for wanting to play a dwarven bard with crafting feat instead of a drow bard with Magic Initiate. Subclass I will admit should work, and I have suggested such...

D&D 5E (2024) The more I think about it, the least I like class groups.

I'd like to see feats in the future that grant extra Divine Channeling for Priests, or enhanced Expertise for the skill monkies, or a way to improve ki/rage/superiority points. Each group has some mechanics in common. Focusing on those mechanics for feats or items or other stuff is neat...

D&D 5E (2024) Wither the Wizard? (or: Bards don’t have ACNE)

Notably, 1dnd bard lacks any form of group buffing or debuffs. Which makes doing the iconic inspiring bard kinda impossibe. You would think at minimum they'd have a spell like Heroism or Bane or something. Nah. Making EB into a class feature will solve the MC issue. No one will dip 2 warlock...

D&D 5E (2024) Wither the Wizard? (or: Bards don’t have ACNE)

Well, they just did it exactly that with Bard, so we'll have to see. Honestly, they could do a forth list that combines bard and warlock and work that way. They combined bard/warlock for Tasha hirelings after all. The two are quite compatible.

D&D 5E (2024) Wither the Wizard? (or: Bards don’t have ACNE)

No more than the bard now having four subclass levels instead three. Actually, far less - its super easy to just say "level 1 feature is now level 3. level 6 stays the same." Etc. EB is probably a class feature, sure. Here's the thing with the pact forms. At least this is my guess based on...

D&D 5E (2024) Wither the Wizard? (or: Bards don’t have ACNE)

Well, its highly likely that all subclasses are going to be gained at level 3. So, unless they make blade/book/chain/talisman the new subclasses, its very likely that warlocks will have fiend/fae/GOO/undead as the four patrons being tested, and they'll be at level 3. Level 1 is probably going...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger playtest discussion

Turn the rogue into the F-35 aircraft. Not a joke. Maybe a bit exaggerated, but... I've been toying with ways of making caltrops, ball bearings, alchemist fire, vials of acid, poisons, all the different rogue toys all relevant at increasing levels. If it works out, then just give the rogue...

D&D 5E (2024) Wither the Wizard? (or: Bards don’t have ACNE)

I suspect that wizards will be the only ones with unfettered access to any and all Schools in the Arcane list - that will be their advantage over the sorcerers and warlocks, who suffer from small, school restricted lists. Wizards will still need to prep spells restricted by their spellbook...

    D&D 5E (2024) Bard Playtest discussion

Fun thought - those bonus skills? Arcane, Nature, Religion? They just so happen to correspond to the three spell lists - arcane, primal, divine. I don't think that's a cooincidence. So, we do start off with some connection to magic here. Demons are weak to iron, like fae. In fact, given the...

    D&D 5E (2024) 48 subclasses in the 2024 PHB: What are they?

12 classes x 4 subclasses each = 48. Barbarian - zealot / berserker, beast / totem, storm / wild, ancestral guardian Bard - lore, valor / sword, glamour / eloquence, whispers Cleric - life, light, knowledge, war Druid - land, moon, shepherd/fire, healer Fighter - Samurai/Champion hybrid...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger playtest discussion

My circle's reaction: "I like the rogue. I love the ranger."

    D&D 5E (2024) There needs to be a 4th spell list.

My recommendation - Fix the lack of iconic bard spells through subclass spell list. Its what Tasha's did to fix Sorcerer, it can work here. The Lore bard is already getting Arcane, Nature (primal) and Religion (divine) skills - give them a subclass list that gives them the option to take, say...

    D&D 5E (2024) The rapier problem

Is the rapier really a problem? Or is it just getting flak for being the go-to Dex melee weapon? 1d4 is the lowest damage, and that's daggers (finesse/thrown/conceal/dual weilding). Short swords are finesse/dual wielding 1d6. Rapier is just the finesse weapon with no bells or whistles - should...

D&D 5E (2024) Darkvision: it's here to stay for most races. What penalties could be added to keep is viable, but still have incentive to use light?

Humans are far and away the most popular race to play, and they don't have dark vision.

D&D 5E (2024) Should classes have primary ability scores?

Yes and no. Like.... I'm down with a ranger or rogue going with Strength builds. Or if all spellcasters at the table used Intelligence or something. I would not be inclined towards a Barbarian using Charisma to smack things with their weapon.

D&D 5E (2024) Split the Players Handbook into two books: Lower Tiers and Upper Tiers

Yaarel, you are wrong. My problem with your posts has nothing to do with any playstyle I might or might not enjoy; rather, I don't think you know what the problems with high level play actually are. You're breaking and "fixing" the parts that have nothing to do with high level play, and I'm...

D&D 5E (2024) Split the Players Handbook into two books: Lower Tiers and Upper Tiers

I mean, its great that you're putting such serious thought into the lack of high level play issue, but I feel like you are so completely misidentifying the actual problems with high level play that you are accidentily compounding the actual problems rather than solving anything.

D&D 5E (2024) Split the Players Handbook into two books: Lower Tiers and Upper Tiers

Okay, gotta ask. Where you getting those levels? Because 5e is broken into four tiers 1 through 4, 5 to 10, 11 to 16, and 17+. Breaking up the established tiers is odd. Especially for warlock players. Either way, still doesn't change that going to level 20 is very likely a sacred cow and not...

D&D 5E (2024) Split the Players Handbook into two books: Lower Tiers and Upper Tiers

Going to level 20 would probably be a sacred cow. I can't see people liking that, simply for tradition's sake. Personally, I think that making a 5e version of EL 6 rules would be worth looking into. Cap the game at level 10. Work out a way to make higher level spells work as rituals. Set the...
