I re-read your original post, and realized that Warlords 3/4, although fun, are not "historical" (although they are still fun). For historical, try Korsun Pocket. It supports e-mail turns. http://www.matrixgames.com/games/korsunpocket/

We had a group playing and sending turns back & forth for "Warlords 3", when it came out. I believe the current incarnation, "Warlords 4", also allows turns to be saved and sent as data files. Warlords 3 was quite fun, by the way. We had some good fights going back & forth. I haven't tried...
