D&D 5E (2024) Psionics: What Do You Want?

I'm not complaining about spell reuse. I'm saying that spells and spell reuse has been part of the identity of the psion in 2e, 3.0, and 3.5 and anyone claiming they weren't a spellcaster is trying to retcon. I wish they weren't spellcasters with a splash of paint - but that's what they have...

D&D 5E (2024) Psionics: What Do You Want?

I'm with you right until this paragraph - but when you're trying to convince me that something like Levitate (Psionic) from 3.5 isn't a spell when it literally references the arcane spell I start wondering how little paint it takes for you to think something is different. They didn't even bother...

D&D 5E (2024) Psionics: What Do You Want?

Every single psion D&D has offered in every single edition has been disappointing to me, with the best psion in any edition being the 2014 Aberrant Mind (not letting them change subclass spells killed this in 2024 for me). The best psychic in the history of D&D for me has been the 2024 Great Old...

Critical Role to Run Grimdark Daggerheart Miniseries

If you have total control over the tone you must have a very docile group of players. And yes if you have all the acting done against a green screen you aren't at the mercy of the actual environment and have more direct control

Critical Role to Run Grimdark Daggerheart Miniseries

But they allow you more control over the tone than simple D&D style success/fail (never mind "roll to see if you have to roll again"). And a lot of grimdark is about the tone.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I mean we can all be disingenuous and cherry pick to pretend that moving parts don't exist or that single dimensional moving parts don't move at all. And we can assume good faith and that people can have different opinions they can back up with facts! As for fewer moving parts? Each part moves...

Critical Role to Run Grimdark Daggerheart Miniseries

Just about any success-with-consequences game has a huge advantage over any non-success-with-consequences game for grimdark fantasy. On every single roll the PCs have about a 45% chance of "Rolling with fear" which means something gets worse, and a 45% chance of "rolling with hope" which allows...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I can't agree it's that clear cut. A level 1 Daggerheart character has: Stats Two ancestry abilities One community ability One class Hope ability (Costs 3 hope to use) One to two (mostly two) class abilities One to two (mostly two) subclass abilities Two domain abilities (which may be one...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

A few more than that. You're looking at level 1 and have missed the domain abilities. My "character crunch" estimate is about equal to a 5e Monk from levels 1-3 with a bit steeper curve after that. But you have more variety and options thanks to the core mechanics including choices on rest and...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

Having been through the rulebook myself I think the split isn't too different from 5e's pretty freeform non-combat and relatively crunchy combat (at least compared to that skill system). The Daggerheart combat will certainly be faster than 5e's and is easier to track. The target audience are...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

To chime in this feels like a D&D-centric approach to me both because D&D 5e is a game with fairly crunchy and tedious combat and pretty light out of combat (as was 4e) and because there's a significant number of groups that are more than fine with this as long as the rules are good leading to...

D&D 5E (2024) How's the adoption of the new Goliath types going?

In my experience people who want to play goliaths play stone or hill, people who want to play genasi play the others. The two most popular races that weren't previously in the PHB.

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Horror Subclasses Unearthed Arcana

My 5e vampire (must update for 2024) got split between sub classes of monk and warlock. I think it's too big for one class to own.

D&D 5E (2024) If Your Builds Not Online By Level 6 Dont Bother?

I think that a lot of people don't understand that Wizard 20 or Fighter 20 are builds. Definitely. This is not my experience. More accurately it is my experience of D&D campaigns but not systems designed for short campaigns or even one shots where a TPK is a fine ending.

D&D 5E (2024) If Your Builds Not Online By Level 6 Dont Bother?

But it's definitely more than functional 3-6 with Shield at L3 and second attack at L5. It's not a multi class that needs to be carried

D&D 5E (2014) I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

I'm not sure how true this is. My 5.24 wizard could be played using 5.14 rules and basically no one would notice. Our melee MVP is a 5.14 Paladin/Hexblade in a 5.24 campaign. Our Moon Druid has just got out of the levels where a 5.14 moon druid was overwhelmingly better. Yeah the monk got a...

D&D 5E (2024) What upcoming WotC D&D product are you excited about?

Feels almost like 2011 again. And when it comes to good and innovative mechanics in D&D I'll take just about anything by WotC over anything by TSR after 1980. Possibly after 1975.

D&D 5E (2024) If Your Builds Not Online By Level 6 Dont Bother?

Just adding to this WotC era D&D (all of them) have painfully slow combat and D&D in general has mechanical character development that is on rails with at best a few switches. Apocalypse World by contrast was explicitly designed for campaigns of about a dozen sessions with strong character...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

As others have been talking about books I'll go into other media and try to stick within the past ten years. Video games are huge. Elden Ring has sold over 25 million copies. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild over 30 million copies. Witcher 3 over 50 million. Skyrim over 60 million, and...
