    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

If I call someone out specifically it may get me in trouble - so no. But generally, I see a lot of people asking questions that basically boil down to, "Hey, should I care at all about what my players want? It might get in the way of me doing what I want to do, so I'm leaning towards a big old...

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

You do need to remember to put these capabilities into context. Dueling, for example, can add 16 damage to your attacks during a round at 20th level (with an action surge - maybe 20 with haste and a reaction attack)... but to benefit from it you must be wielding a weapon that inherently deals...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

This is an insanely bizarre thread. Some of the questions being asked here are huge red flags. If you've posted in this thread, I thoroughly encourage you to calendar a reminder to come back and reread the thread in a few weeks. I have trouble believing the people that are asking some of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Creating a Feast Scenario

My first suggestion: Don't do it during a session. Instead, do it via chats/emails/Skype/Discord between sessions. A scenario like this will often break down into a number of smaller conversations. That can be a slog during a session as each player takes their turns and the others sit and...

D&D 5E (2014) How much should it cost to use a permanent teleportation circle?

Generally true ... except when you're creating a circle. You can use the castings at the time of the creation to send people, goods, etc... through the circles you create to help offset the costs. It might cost about 500 gp to send a galley on a 2 week trip along the sword coast - carrying 150...

D&D General Does a multiclassed fighter still get the Action Surge Boost at level 17?

A cantrip die and an attack have superficial similarities ("I get to roll an extra damage die!"), but they are very different. A cantrip dealing 4d8 + a little bit is going to do about 20 to 25 damage. However, a Great Weapon Master PC can often do more than 25 damage in one strike, and if you...

D&D General "I'd like to run (or play in) an all ___________ campaign." (+)

Yes, always, but that wasn't what I meant. I meant all nature themed PCs - I just got a bit cheeky in my answer (and chair imprint).

D&D General Dungeons and Dragons: The Makeup Set!!!

I'm currently eating so there isn't room for you to put words in my mouth. I said this should worry fans. I said it is a sign that they're trying to squeeze the IP. I said we should be concerned. I didn't say this was the tipping point that suddenly made a bad situation out of a good one...

D&D General "I'd like to run (or play in) an all ___________ campaign." (+)

What fills my blank is an awfully personal question ... oh, wait, I see what you mean. I occasionally run an all goblin set of adventures. The PCs play members of a tribe of goblins. The tribe starts by sending them in to clear out an infestation in some caves so that they can take it over...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

Pg 6 of the DMG. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/introduction#KnowYourPlayers It then goes on to describe how to tailor the game experience to the player's desires by addressing the styles players may enjoy utilizing. This entire page, at the very beginning of the DMG, is telling you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

While I agree that different systems are better at different things, I am going to strongly disagree with the notion that you can't run a gritty and terrifying dungeon crawl in 5E. The PCs in my current campaign are currently living through a Groundhog Day type Ravenloft scenario and it starts...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm talking about choosing a system, and choosing the homebrew rules to use within that system, as part of deciding how to run a campaign. And I'm talking about doing that with the players, not doing it myself and telling them what I'll run. I have a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

... why? When I start a campaign I get to know the players first. If they're new, I run a short adventure for them and use that as a diagnostic. Then I have a first session 0 and ask them about what they want to do and play. We bounce ideas back and forth and I use that to influence my...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlock Pact of the Talisman--What Am I Missing?

The 'Strength' of the Talisman Pact is in the Invocations. They're not strong, but a careful party can take advantage of them. I dropped it on an NPC and there was a PC death as a result. The Rebuke of the Talisman allows someone to set up a push that can't be avoided with an ability check or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

I don't see what either of those statements has to do with the goal of the game being the player experience.

D&D 5E (2014) Changing Cantrips: Guidance, Resistance, True Strike, and Friends

As a suggestion: Don't change - add. Keep the 'less effective' by-the-book cantrips in the game, but add new ones that PCs can select that do the types of things you suggest above. I 'test the waters' on these types of things by first introducing them via magic items that PCs can use as if...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does/Should D&D Have the Player's Game Experience as a goal?

I am really confused by this thread. Are we asking if a goal of the game we run should be to give the players a good experience? Or am I missing the point here? D&D is an RPG - a role playing game. Characters are selected by players because they're something they want to enjoy playing. We...

D&D 5E (2014) DM imposed restrictions to the game (+)

I allow: All official WotC Products 5E. All Unearthed Arcana for 5E. All of my Homebrew (which is a lot of stuff). Anything else if you ask. I may modify it if I have grave concerns. I've never regretted this approach. The game is far less fragile than people think it is.
