D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

It doesn't say that, however. Well, you have the issue of obtaining 9th level spells in your spellbook. But yes, what does happen? It's a fair question. I know how I'd run it in my game (you can't) but I am not so positive the rules were written that way.

D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

Completed Tomb of Annihilation last night. January 14th, 2021 to April 16th, 2025. Epic!

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth Errata

Halfing is in a fog cloud and had used the Hide action while there due to the Heavy Obscurement qualifying them for the Hide action. Foes 1, 2 and 3 have no ability to see in a fog cloud, but just triggered See Invisibility on themselves which allows them to see a creature that had the Invisible...

All see invisibility does is "you see creatures and objects that have the Invisible condition as if they were visible". It does not say it negates the invisible condition. You still retain the invisible condition, you just can be seen "as if they were visible" by the creature that has See...

Do Tariffs Apply To RPG Books? Maybe, Maybe Not!

You're not a professional Economist are you? You listed your credentials as "writer, game designer, marketer, podcaster" I have lifelong business experience, run a business, and am an attorney. But I am not an expert on the level of professional Economist. In terms of being an Economist, I'm an...

Yes but I'm OK with uncertainty on that front as long as Crawford (and before him Mearls) would reply we'd usually go with that.

It was nice when WOTC had someone who would answer these kinds of questions direction on Twitter or elsewhere.

I don't know. I'd really like to know though. My 9th level arcane trickster, 3 level wizard would sure like to know if he can hide as a bonus action, step out into the open with a minimum 22 hide check thanks to Reliable Talent and expertise, and then upcast Tasha's Hideous Laughter on three...

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth Errata

So you can hide behind 3/4ths cover. But if someone casts see invisible (even if you're just a rogue using the ordinary hide action), they can see you behind 3/4ths cover? "as if they were visible" to me means if you still meet the conditions for hiding, which includes 3/4ths cover, they're...

So it now reads: Hide [Action] With the Hide action, you try to conceal yourself. To do so, you must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity (Stealth) check while you’re Heavily Obscured or behind Three-Quarters Cover or Total Cover, and you must be out of any enemy’s line of sight; if you can see a...

D&D General So what about the SRDs?

Woah, they fixed it! Conjure Fey (p. 255) In the “Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot” subsection, “2d12” is now “1d12.” Conjure Minor Elementals (p. 254) In the “Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot” subsection, “2d8” is now “1d8.”

Do Tariffs Apply To RPG Books? Maybe, Maybe Not!

As someone who has posted about how tariffs have directly massively damaged me, yes I am aware. Please don't mistake my correcting a claim someone thinks they know "with 100% certainty" the future as some defense of anything. I disagree. See, that's you telling me with certainty you know the...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

Right but you couldn't have access to anything else anyway because the Ranger has a specific list, as does the Sorcerer, they differ, so that's the most you could have. In the example I am giving, the wizard can access higher level spells through their spell book and copying higher level spells.

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

By the way for what it is worth I am not trying to game the system here. I think you track spell slots as a single-class for purposes of spell preparations, then you calculate them again as multi-class for purposes of total spell slots. And that's how I'd DM it. But I wanted people's thoughts on...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

Indeed. And the multiclassing rules say you track preparations based on single-class but spell slots based on combined classes, and yet preparations in single-class are based on spell slots. So do you track spell slots for each single-class when calculating preparations, but multi-class when...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

Yes. However, the rule for the single-classed Wizard is, "The chosen spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots." That's the limit that class gives on what spells you can prepare. So what spell slots do you have? Are you seeing the issue I am having now?

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

Yes. And the rules for WHAT YOU CAN PREPARE is what I am asking about You skipped a step. How do you know a Wizard 3 can prepare level 3 wizard spells? By looking at the spell slots chart, not at a separate prepared spells chart. Because there is no separate prepared spells chart. The Wizard...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

Yes they're prepared individually, but still depend on spell slots for what you can prepare individually. So do you track spell slots individually for purposes of preparation?

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

Right the issue is "higher level than spells you prepare." The "Prepare" rules seem to say you can prepare any spell you know up to your highest spell slot. Oh no, the mention of the higher level spell caster in the party is just to mention I can access spells for my spellbook of higher levels...
