    D&D 5E (2014) How does 5e know what you're thinking? Psionics Mechanics..

I never liked psionics, I would take the opportunity to drop them entirely from official support.

D&D 5E (2014) Parrying and Protecting versus spells and othe rstuff

Yes, this is also an option. Let's call it 'Defence'. If you're wielding a weapon it can be used against melee attacks. If you have a shield it can be used against melee, ranged, magical and area attacks. You could even throw in an evasion-like effect, usable against any source of damage, if...

D&D 5E (2014) Parrying and Protecting versus spells and othe rstuff

Snide remarks aside, I don't want swords deflecting magic missiles (maybe at high level you can become a Jedi), and I don't want tumbling in full plate either.

D&D 5E (2014) Parrying and Protecting versus spells and othe rstuff

Ahem, the ability is called 'Parry' - I would support being able to reduce arrow damage with a shield at 1st level, but it wouldn't be parrying.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

Unless you allow.. DOUBLE FIGHTERS.. with all the class features twice!

D&D 5E (2014) Parrying and Protecting versus spells and othe rstuff

Probably more appropriate as 'melee attack' with later options to wuxia protect yourself against missiles and magic rays.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing in Next

The spells vs. other stuff problem is fundamental to the multiclass issue because of the depth of these two features. Access to spell levels is deep, like a feat tree but with 17 stages. Access to +1 to hit is shallow because it does the same thing for everyone, there's no requirement to use...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Neonchameleon You seem to be discussing homogeneity within classes, whereas I believe the poster you responded to is referring to homegeneity between classes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

3E multiclassing is my favourite in principle. In many ways it promised a less class-focused system, where you could just take the classic four, mix and match levels, and you'd have a character that filled the archetype in your head. Prestige classes offered something similar. Mechanically it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing in Next

I think this sort of thing would work and create appropriately themed Wizards (rather than the swiss army spellcasters we have had before). Basically, there has never been much of an effort to restrict access to abilities related to skills and physical combat, but there is a huge barrier to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing in Next

What we're seeing at the moment is a healthy dose of both 1 and 2. Wizards are quadratic (I'll argue that before they were cubic!). The problem is, gaining a level in a non-spellcasting class gives you perhaps a bit more to-hit, a bit more damage, a special ability. Gaining a spellcasting...

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

Yes, I think they ought to consider a return to the old-fashioned style of multiclassing. You have both classes, right from the start. Otherwise dipping is inevitable and superior.

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

... and another thing! Don't mix strongly different mechanics within the same class! That's confusing, wasteful of design space other classes could be using and the class loses its distinctive identity.

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

Just give Wizards more spells to begin with! As they progress, take away low-level spell slots!

    More Than a Shaggy Person

I prefer neither breasts nor udders, because I liked the fluff of Minotaurs being cursed beings rather than a race. I like them to be men with cow heads and a tail though, with some cow hair is fine too.

    D&D 5E (2014) Maybe D&D Should Branch?

So, even if the idea of launching two RPGs, side-by-side, aimed at different players, playstyles, whatever, doesn't wash, then consider the recent boardgame activity at WotC. The skirmish game they have created has a lot of potential, and I wonder if people would play a 'D&D Tactics' type game...

    D&D 5E (2014) Maybe D&D Should Branch?

I was wondering about the business point of view on this. In many industries, individual companies will offer directly competing products, especially when there are competing companies in the same market. They might aim them at different consumers, however, in order to capture more of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Maybe D&D Should Branch?

I was just reading through the thread about interpretation of rules, which wandered into a discussion of the marketing and reception of different editions. Emerikol provided an interesting description of D&D history in which he posited that Pathfinder was a branching point in the game that has...

    The case against Combat Superiority

Vikingkingq I understand that Fighters are specially trained compared with Barbarians, but in the grand scope of all classes that engage in non-magical combat, there is some significant overlap in the sorts of maneuvers that can be performed. For instance, the current iteration of the Fighter...

    The case against Combat Superiority

No! I really do think Fighters should have nice things. I'm just not confident in the current implementation. I think the dice pool mechanic works fine for one class, but I think it is inelegant if extended to other classes, which it may or may not be. In fact what I really want is a unified...
