    D&D 5E (2014) Sight/Vision Rules

Hmm, the problem is that 'Heavily Obscured' is described only as a means to hide, but it's not clear what the effects are otherwise. It's also not clear what effects obscuration has on the vision of those inside fogs, heavy rain etc.

Almost any powder is flammable when finely dispersed, I thought? Roll chemistry checks everyone!

D&D 5E (2014) Why are we still stuck with divine casters knowing all spells?

I wonder if we could manipulate the current spellcasting model. At the moment you select a number of spells to prepare at the start of the day (or pray for I suppose), and then you can cast those as you please, even at various levels. If spells were somehow classified, into exclusive spheres...

D&D 5E (2014) Why are we still stuck with divine casters knowing all spells?

The limited feature of spheres, from 2E, was that everyone angled for at least minor access to Healing because they were a cleric, and so many useful spells were in that sphere. Aside from that, the principle was good. So how about we have spheres, but we allow the casting of non-sphere spells...

We could call these subsets, "Domains" perhaps? ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Define Advantage and Disadvantage and when it should be used

I think a quick way to resolve the issues with stacking is to say something like double disadvantage makes something impossible, though that might be a bit harsh. Think of it this way, are your chances of hitting an invisible creature any worse with a weapon you're not familiar with? I don't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sight/Vision Rules

I agree that actively hiding should be better than just surrounding yourself with fog. I think the key difference is whether or not you can be targetted directly. But it's confusing, the meaning of these terms aren't immediately apparent. 'Hidden', at least to me, implies only a visual...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sight/Vision Rules

Aha, I think I understand that. So you're able to target someone unless they hide, and presumably your attacks have disadvantage. That makes some sense, but then isn't the obscured person also giving advantage because they can't defend themselves properly? It's akin to being invisible (but your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sight/Vision Rules

For the first time in a long while I managed to run a little playtest online last night. Down into the Mines of Madness went a pre-generated party of an Elven Ranger, Dwarven Paladin and Elven Wizard. Overall it was good fun, but we had a bit of a headache with the sight and vision rules. See...

The 7-Day RPG Contest [Voting is over!]

I submitted DoC RPG (The Deck of Cards RPG), and it's interesting to see two other systems that also utilise cards. I wanted to write alternative rules for using a tarot deck myself, for example, but didn't find the time. I could have voted optimally for only myself, but I gave my other two...

It's The EN World 7-Day RPG Contest! $1000 Prize!

Well, I decided to spend some of the weekend writing up a game I once came up with in a pub. I'm pretty sure it's had less development than a week would allow for, so it feels in the spirit of the contest. DoC RPG: The Deck of Cards Roleplaying Game This game is designed to be a framework for...

D&D 5E (2014) ,Q&A: New Skill system, Skill dice, and profiencies (May 2)

Weapon attack bonus varies with class, magic attack bonus varies with class, so could we split skills into some large categories and assign their progression by class? I can imagine Physical, Finesse, Mental and Social skills (basically covering fightery things, thievy things, wizardy things and...

    Character Sheet Contest Finalists

I am absolutely pro-icons, if anyone remembers my monster design rambling some months back. The sheet in question is a bit messy though, but it's the most inspiring for future designs.

It was a joke playing on that exact theme, never mind.

Question regarding the 7-Day RPG Contest

I do think the new rules are better, if only because there's just the one person who might quibble over rights. I might enter, and if I win, buy a lifetime gold subscription to the site for $1000? That would be the better prize, psychologically :p Oh, and how about a catchy contest name?

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: Subclasses

That is a fair point - a bad example on my part. They might be better as a Paladin subclass, or even a background/speciality since they don't have any iconic abilities (that I know of from the various D&D versions there have been).

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: Subclasses

Maybe the Fighter-subclass-Knight moves two spaces in one direction, then another space orthogonally, jumping over any enemies in the way.

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: Subclasses

I think the difference between a class and a subclass is whether or not there are lots of different types of it. So if you say the class is Fighter, we can all think of a bunch of types of Fighter who need their mechanics to operate as intended. If we say Samurai, well, that's so specific that...

Question regarding the 7-Day RPG Contest

I really don't want to be a pain in the ass, but I *hope* that the following complaints can be viewed constructively. Standard disclaimer, I'm not a lawyer, but consumer and copyright law is very easy to read up on these days. I sincerely question the legality of this contest. You have failed...
