The first 3E book I bought was 3PP. I bought the 3e core books some time later, and the 5E starter set and core books in 2014. All my other D&D purchases have been 3PP.

Well, more often things are made by creators, then bought by corporations to make money for their shareholders. None of the good stuff is ever made by the corporations.

At this point WotC could just stay quiet until they launch OneD&D, and all 5E OGL Kickstarters would die on the vine.

Are you asking about trademark protection rather than copyright? Because of that there is remarkably little, but it would take some time and effort to be sure. But if you are writing your own game from scratch without deliberately lifting mechanics or terminology from the SRD or their books it...

I would be surprised if they think anyone will sign up to the new OGL as-is. My guess is that this is all simply to drive 3PPs into bespoke agreements to produce things for WotC's new VTT while making all older OGL materials irrelevant. Even if all the indies abandon the OGL* WotC loses nothing...

No matter the outcome of this I think from this point on everyone will be looking at how much they really need that OGL in their products...

WotC would have to be pretty naive if they thought someone wouldn't leak it, though. But then the current set of execs don't seem to be entirely of this planet...

Well, as he says himself, nothing's changed since 1974. D&D hasn't needed TSR/WotC since that point, TSR/WotC needed D&D. Official vs. Folk is a spectrum, with extremes at both ends but most gamers fall closer to the mid-range. TTRPGs don't need D&D, either.
