D&D General “‘Scantily Clad and Well Proportioned’: Sexism and Gender Stereotyping in the Gaming Worlds of TSR and Dungeons & Dragons.”

Back in the days of 3.0, Dragon had a cover depicting a close-up of a bare-chested male elf. A few issues later, they published a letter that someone had written complaining about how they couldn't leave that issue lying around, because they didn't want to have to explain gay erotica to their...

There are some breath-taking classical ruins in Libya. I visited Leptis Magna near Al-Khoms once: the site just goes on and on and on. And when you think you've seen it all, you visit the amphitheatre...

Why a rapier is bad for an adventurer

If I recall correctly, "Tales From the Floating Vagabond" divided weapons into the categories "Sharp Pointy Thing" and "Long Sharp Pointy Thing", and "Gun", "Big Gun", "Really Big Gun", "Oh My God That's A Big Gun" and "Don't Point That Thing At My Planet". At the other end of the spectrum...

TSR Thieves used to be able to pick locks to open magical closures

If you're referring to what I think you are, in 3.x it was removing magical traps. By definition they have a DC of higher than 20, and only a rogue could disarm them. I don't recall anything about magical locks.

Why a rapier is bad for an adventurer

My personal pet peeve: elves having a natural proficiency with the longbow. Because when you live in a forest, what you really need is something that can shoot a hundred yards or more? And the longsword, too. In among the branches and the brush, you can't go wrong with three feet of steel to swing.

Living Romans in the Americas Plausible*?

Also, after Europe's population levels peaked in the early- to mid-1300s, they plummeted for the next fifty years or so and took a long time to recover. If the overpopulation had continued, people would have been more inclined to look for new lands to settle. As it was, no-one needed new lands...

Living Romans in the Americas Plausible*?

Also, about fishing grounds: rich fishing grounds were a source of vast wealth, and heavily disputed. A fisher fleet stumbling across the Newfoundland coast isn't going to boast about it while various cod wars are going on. (As I recall, one of the facts supporting the idea of English fishermen...

Living Romans in the Americas Plausible*?

So now we've established the possibility, the question is this: what have the Romans ever done for the Americas?

Living Romans in the Americas Plausible*?

And there's the possibility that the Voyages of St. Brendan and Mael Duin are based on actual reports of Irish sailors reaching the Caribbean.

Living Romans in the Americas Plausible*?

I've read that there's credible evidence that English fisherman were visiting the coast of Newfoundland in the 13th or 14th century.
