"Haut comme trois pommes". The equivalent in German is "drei Käse hoch" (three cheeses tall), and in Dutch "drie turven hoog" (three peat bricks tall). European legislation seems to have put an end to all these units of measurement.

D&D General 50 Years. The Least Popular Class Is......

The BBEG in the Dragonlance novel Weasel's Luck was an illusionist. I always assumed it was based on instructions from higher up to include some of the less common classes.

D&D General How you would have done the Dungeons and Dragons' movie - 80's edition

I remember picking up the Conan Chronicles after the first few WoT books came out (when they were still readable), and being very excited about one of my favourite authors doing one of my favourite characters. I was disappointed, to say the least. Interestingly, I was at a Q&A with RJ once...

I was in Athens a couple of years ago, and was really disappointed with the Acropolis, compared with the first time I visited. The whole top of the hill has been paved in concrete now. It looks like a carpark.

Worse than NIMBYs are "not in someone else's backyard if it inconveniences me". I remember reading a hiking guide a while ago where the author complained about powerlines spoiling the view. As if his occasional enjoyment of the landscape was more important than the local residents' right to...

How do I know if I'm reading a good/up to date history book?

The past few years I've been listening to audiobooks about all those areas of history that were ignored at school. The Persian Empire, the Vikings, power dynamics in the Middle Ages, Eastern Europe, the Ottoman Empire, Ancient Egypt, the turn of the first millennium. Fascinating stuff. And at...

How do I know if I'm reading a good/up to date history book?

A while ago I had a discussion with a trained historian, when I mentioned something I'd learned from a history audiobook and which she disputed. "I've never heard of that before," she said. I replied that the book's author was a fairly successful writer in the "history for the masses" category...

I knew this, because of "Whispers Underground" by Ben Aaronovitch. My TIL: power companies use the residual heat in wastewater (from showering and washing up) for district heating.

D&D General We need a kill Bargle adventure path

In the interests of female empowerment, I think there should be an adventure path to go back in time and prevent Bargle from killing Aleena, so she can kill him.

D&D General Elephants are cheaper than Warhorses

There's probably a warranty component in the warhorse. If it breaks down during battle, a new one will be brought up to you. A few minutes' paperwork, check it for existing damage, and you're on your way.

If I'm not mistaken, Babylonian rulers also conducted archeological digs at earlier Mesopotamian sites.
