    Realistic Consequences vs Gameplay

Seems the GM is afraid of Player reaction. Why? You told them before the game started what to expect. Crimes against nobility are normally punishable by death, to keep the citizenry in line. Now, you're afraid of doing what makes the most sense. Why? Because your good friend is involved...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

Still waiting for examples of play that demonstrate how "where random rolls don't fit in ways that having nothing to do with what a group chooses, nor with the (un)fairness of the world." It's unusual enough to require examples.

    Campaign Design Tutorial

I watched this and the "making great villains" video. Great material. Thanks, Jason!

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

In your examples of PB games that don't favor player skill could you provide examples outside your play group of this? I only ask because given any opportunity to 'game the system', why wouldn't the player do so since such a micro-game confers benefit? Your dismissive attitude of how groups...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

Duh. If the game doesn't allow it, then YES, you can't exercise that option. Are you mad those games don't? Write your own then. You seem to think "fair" is every RPG allowing you to do everything. Please design & publish THAT game (lol).

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

Preference is preference. Can I as GM design tight NPCs that might overwhelm novice and even experienced Point-Buy players? Yup. I know ALL the kinky munchkin twists. Is that fair? If the novice PB player designs a nice warrior who's outclassed by the warrior PC of a more experienced player...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

Again, random rolls work for a given group that are fine with them. Never played BW or AW or 4e. Do they allow random ability rolls? If so, the group would decide if they wanted to use them.

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

The world isn't fair. Random rolls fit any game a group chooses. On point-buy, it isn't fair either: there's a level of system mastery that goes into making competent PB PCs. Players more knowledgeable about GURPS or Shadowrun or HERO or Savage Worlds or Mutants & Masterminds will build BETTER...

    Fights

Problem solving for fights? • an NPC who fights defensively: how do the PCs get a hit in? • an NPC takes a hostage: how do the PCs win without sacrificing the hostage? • an NPC uses the environment (high ground, rain, cover): how do the PCs overcome obstacles to win?

    Fitz, does that say anything?

    How to Evil Properly?

Yeah, but: Slavery was, following the Capitalist logic, THE IDEAL (free labor). It only failed when the Abolitionists and slaves refused to be ignored. But, if you were running a business and didn't have to pay your workers, would you? And if you fed, clothed and housed those unpaid, but...

Real Life Places That Inspire You As A DM

Big cities. It's the "anything that can happen" aspect of them. I've gotten story ideas walking downtown SF and overlooking San Diego from Sunset Cliffs. Cities breed wild stories, even from overheard conversations at a cafe. I'm a hard introvert who loves the peace of Nature. Birdsong, the...

    Game Design Masterclass: Going Diceless

It's "story' vs. "game". If you want to tell a story, write your book. No dice needed. Want to play an RPG, randomizers like dice inform the group regarding actions.

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

Looks like a dated thread with a user calling others cheap for not buying an overpriced rpg with so-so reviews. The reviews were exactly why I didn't buy it: buying a bad rpg happens. We've all done it. Spending over $200 for a bad rpg is a huge mistake. I've yet to see positive comments from a...
