    D&D 5E (2024) How to fix multiclassing?

Current multi-classing gives us all of what current multi-classing can do. It can cover a much broader array of thematic concepts and create far more interesting character-building decisions than any of the proposed alternatives. I'd love to see balance improved, but the current "problem-cases"...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to fix multiclassing?

There are definitely some balance issues with a la carte multiclassing. Some abilities are too strong as a one or two level dip (eldritch blast, rage). Some higher level abilities are too painful to forgo (extra attack, high level spellcasting). But the system gives an amazing level of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Cross-class subclasses

I think designing around this possibility would put too many constraints on class design. Not only would classes need to gain subclass features at the same levels, they'd also need to gain the same amount of their power from subclass features. The current classes aren't designed that way. Some...

D&D 5E (2024) What playtest package is next?

I think Mage is the least likely option. Sorcerers and Warlocks in the 2014 rules are both known-spell casters with unique spell lists, so it wouldn't make much sense to release their playtest before reviewing the Bard feedback. In contrast, Clerics and Druids are already prepared casters, and...

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Playtest Expert Classes survey is up! Update! Now due Nov 23rd.

I hope so, but it is obnoxious to have both of the first two deadlines pushed back. As it begins to look like a pattern, people will start wondering whether to take the next playtest's initial deadline seriously. And making the announcement at the very last minute is a real disappointment for...

    D&D 5E (2014) When lore and PC options collide…

When I design a setting, it doesn't need to have a place for every character option. But if it's at all feasible, it will have a place for the specific handful of options that the people at the table are excited about playing. More broadly, I think this is more a question of group decision...

D&D 5E (2024) What can WotC do in OneD&D to make the DM's Guide worth buying?

My perspective is that the PHB is primarily for player-facing options. Magic items are used by players, but the player can't generally choose between them in the way they can choose between races, classes/subclasses, backgrounds or spells. Instead, they have access to the specific items they...

Dragonlance Dragonlance Creators Reveal Why There Are No Orcs On Krynn

To the broader question of including or excluding ancestries from a setting, I think the assumption that any given option should default to be included is frankly absurd. The number of possible fantasy/sci-fi species is for all practical purposes infinite, and even the most kitched sink of...

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Playtest Expert Classes survey is up! Update! Now due Nov 23rd.

Just took the survey. It really is obnoxious to have one survey page asking about all of the glossary elements and then separate pages repeating some but not all of those questions. It also seems silly to ask for ratings for the generic feat and subclass feature slots of the list of class...

D&D 5E (2024) Dropping armor proficiencies and using Strength as base for armor use.

In general, I think this is a valid concern. In this particular case, though, the fighter's "stuff" is having a choice between similarly effective STR-based and DEX-based options. That's something I think should be given away more braodly. The fighter can get something else to compensate.

    D&D 5E (2024) 1D&D; new ability cap at 18?

One possible complication to consider: If feats include ASIs to specific stats, lowering the cap from 18 to 20 makes it much easier for these ASIs to be wasted, which may deter players from taking feats that would otherwise fit their characters well (personally, I favor getting rid of the fixed...

D&D 5E (2024) Dropping armor proficiencies and using Strength as base for armor use.

Because it allows strength and training to complement one another, rather than ignoring one or giving them separate effects.

D&D 5E (2024) What is the lowest damage Fireball could deal where you would still prep/use it?

At 6d6, I think it would still be a combat staple. At 4d6, it would be more of a niche spell, but still useful against large numbers of weak enemies (In the most extreme versions of this scenario, reduced damage could actually be a benefit because of friendly fire considerations). Fire...

D&D 5E (2024) Dropping armor proficiencies and using Strength as base for armor use.

DEX is OP in that it allows characters to boost attack rolls, damage, AC and initiative with a single stat (which makes strength-based attacks a trap choice for most weapon users with limited armor proficiencies). This proposal doesn't make DEX stronger in that context though. It just makes it...

D&D 5E (2024) Dropping armor proficiencies and using Strength as base for armor use.

Currently, 14 DEX gets a wizard +2 AC. Getting +2 AC from 14 STR would be great, but +6 definitely seems like too much. I like this idea.

D&D 5E (2024) Dropping armor proficiencies and using Strength as base for armor use.

I really like the general idea of relaxing armor proficiencies to make strength more competitive with dexterity. That said, I think that these requirements are quite steep from a flavor/worldbuilding perspective. With the setting assumptions I tend to make, this would result in a lot of soldiers...

D&D 5E (2024) Arcane/Divine/Primal Spell Lists: Are the Benefits Real?

It's not difficult, but it's objectively more difficult than simply checking whether the spell is on the Bard list. Which is a problem if ease of use is being presented as one of the main benefits of the new system.

D&D 5E (2024) Arcane/Divine/Primal Spell Lists: Are the Benefits Real?

The way I see it, being able to design a spell available to wizards and warlocks but not sorcerers (for instance) is a feature, not a bug. And I think it's going to be easier to do that on a case by case basis than by keeping track of the implications of each spell school/power source...

D&D 5E (2024) Arcane/Divine/Primal Spell Lists: Are the Benefits Real?

The One D&D playtest puts forward shared Arcane, Divine and Primal spell lists as replacements for unique class-based lists. I think this is a change with significant costs. Unique spell lists are arguably the biggest factor distinguishing spellcasting classes from one another, so removing them...

D&D General House of the Dragon has me thinking about Succession

I completely agree that it's an antiquated idea. But that's going to be true of pretty much any in-universe justification for hereditary monarchy. On that note, I suspect that a scenario like this might produce some form of anti-monarchist movement in addition to the dynastic claimants. After...
