If you want to look at it that way, EVERY rule in the game is optional. I still think it's valid to discuss the effects of a particular rule, its strengths and weaknesses and ramifications.

Are there any descriptions of what these rituals actually do? If not, their inclusion in this introductory product is pointless.

I guess we'll have to judge this claim by comparing how much space is devoted to role-playing type information and scenarious within each paragon path description with how much space describes directly combat-related powers and such.

I've read this claim several times from different posters, and I really don't know how people are able to make it considering the previews we have seen. Minions (at least the ones we've seen in the various D&D previews) DO have a single hit point. Let me quote from the Orc excerpt: "HP 1"...
