Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

It might depend on the specific taboo or other idiosyncrasy. For example, it's taboo and disrespectful in Japan to spit on the field in baseball but very much expected in the US. I'd say neither politics nor religion had a part in that. Going into the ones concerning Cedric, we've seen a bit...

D&D 3.x Time shift; Going back to 3.5!

Be wary of the Truename stuff because the Truenamer is actually mechanically broken in the sense of not working under normal use. To give you an idea, your personal Truename has a DC of 15 + (2x your HD). In other words, to reliably make the check for your own name you have to have at least +5...

    Marionnen's Musings: Featless?

If the want is to make things simpler in the end then this might work, but with the complexity and tediousness of rewriting the entire system to do that and keep some decent level of customization I don't think it's worth it. As mentioned, part of the fun of it for some (including me to a...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

I did notice and comprehend the edit, but I was specifically responding to you saying that it doesn't matter why though I suppose I didn't do quite as good of a job as I would have liked. The why matters because it is through understanding the whys and other parts of a taboo that we can get to...

    Optimizers, oh my!

Just going along with the concept of dual-wielding flails, the character would need TWF and Oversized TWF as well as needing Combat Expertise going into Improved Disarm. The good news is disarm is an attack action so it doesn't prevent full attacks at all. It does somewhat negate using the...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

But it does very much matter why people think something is taboo because in some very well-known cases we eventually find such ideas are silly. For example, it used to be that interracial marriage was taboo due to racism but now such an idea is no longer discriminated against by the general...

Feat similar to Practiced Spellcaster, but for BAB?

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was the Skillful weapon enhancement in Complete Arcane which lets the character treat its BAB as 3/4 total HD, period. Might find abuse in epic like Divine Power sometimes does. There's at least one other use for BAB besides attacks though: It's...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

It is also possible they had their hands tied while writing it since an official D&D book saying that prostitution, an activity widely looked down upon for many reasons, can be made to be good would cause a bit of an outcry despite the cover saying very explicitly "Warning! Content is intended...

    D&D 3.x Going back to 3.5 - advice?

As someone who regularly gets hung up on PC creation being perfect, I'll echo the idea that NPC creation doesn't have to be. For example, chances are the things your party is about to kill won't be using skills unless you've decided to spruce things up with skill tricks from Complete Scoundrel...

    Familiar/Special Mount?

If you're going with Niji's recommendation I'd like to add you should look at Sword of the Arcane Order. Wizard spells are very, very tasty. Depending on how you interpret Battle Blessing you could make the wizard spells prepped in your paladin slots swift actions. Swift True Strike, anyone?

    About Unarmed Striking

So far there seems to be only one ability (a feat named Hammer Fist) that allows doing 1 1/2 times your strength as damage on unarmed strikes. The fact that it exists implicitly means that normally no one can do 1 1/2 STR for damage via unarmed strikes.

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

The original question of "does this work by RAW?" has been questioned and it's evolved a bit. Most agree that by the exact rules the paladin probably wouldn't exist, but most also agree that Cedric is a great character and it is a shame he wouldn't be able to. Which leads into the question of...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

Given how tired I am I guess I wasn't totally clear: In a game where those situations are possible I feel it's important to let players know those questions can come up and to let them opt out if they don't feel comfortable with it. If everyone agrees of course then there's the possibility and...

Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

Something I don't like about recent changes: The location of the Log Out button. I very much like it under my name on the top right because when I want to log off it's quick and easy, but still unobtrusive and I've never accidentally clicked on it. Now it's under the Profile tab and I think to...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

What can I say, I'm a bit cynical when it comes to games and religion/philosophy butting heads. I didn't say that a GM has to police it of course, but I do recommend everyone at the table know what they might be getting themselves into to avoid alienating those who aren't up for such discussion...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

3E is definitely noted as being horribly balanced, but I am under the opinion they did try to make the alignment restriction an offset to the perceived mechanical advantages. Under any kind of decent scrutiny that of course is BS which is probably why they changed things in 4E. As to the...

    Rouge dipping into Scout

Sneak Attack and Skirmish are entirely different abilities that just happen to both be precision damage dice of the 1d6 variety. If you qualify to do both then you do both. Also, you might want to look at Swift Ambusher. By the way, it's Rogue, not Rouge. Rouge is a kind of makeup (and the...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

I'll grant that the original intent was to evaluate the paladin by RAW, but the problem with RAW is that it is still up for interpretation and quite often becomes "Rules As I Interpret Them, And You Can't Prove Me Wrong So There!" Thankfully the latter part of that hasn't really happened in...

    Warblade AoO build

The good news for this is the feat itself (Inhuman Reach) says that the doubled natural reach allows for reach weapons to double the extended reach too. However, it might be advisable to chat with the DM about it beforehand to make sure it does work like that since some will look at that and...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

I think part of the issue here is not that a setting-appropriate paladin couldn't be considered bound by the third model of honor there: It's that such a character can quickly become so difficult to play that any sense of enjoyment is lost, which often contradicts the entire point of playing...
