Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

So long as the inconsistency doesn't lead to absurdities in the game, I agree. Perhaps the DMG should then define what would likely be absurd and/or game-breaking relevant to how the designers have built the game?

    3.x/PF Preference

I like the flexibility 3.5 with late splats offers as well as the insight into what the designers learned about the game over the years. Mearls' post about hexblades at http://community.wizards.com/comment/13411551#comment-13411551 for instance highlights the gap in design knowledge between...

    A Question of Power

I'd go for higher. Simply put, some classes do need the larger ability scores to actually perform as expected while ones that don't need several decent scores such as casters aren't hugely affected by higher stats in most cases.

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Sometimes they're nicely tied in color such as the Exotic Weapon Master requiring a few ranks of Craft: Weaponsmithing. Other times, however, they can directly tie in to a character's concept. The Profession (Sailor) skill is detailed quite well in Stormwrack and has various rules with regards...

    Help with Duskblade

You might want to take this to http://www.enworld.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?363-Rogues-Gallery-Character-Builds-amp-Optimization That said, what books are allowed? What is your spell selection? What Empirate is referring to is that WotC has clarified that taking one's hand off a 2-handed...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

:p Haha. The standard rogue doesn't have a capstone. The dead level abilities are underwhelming at that level considering the epic disable device checks can already reduce the time and, while difficult, aren't impossible if the character really has gone full-bore into disabling stuff.

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Heh, here I feel young at 24. I started playing D&D in 2006 during my junior year of high school so for about a third of my life I've participated in games and discussions about it. Even with a heavy-handed DM, I do see some problems with the game. The swashbuckler, for example, has rather...

The Sacred Cow Slaughterhouse: Ideas you think D&D's better without

One's concerns about optimization might be valid though, especially if it's a difficult game and the players are expected to pull out everything they've got just to survive. In response to halflings themselves not making as capable barbarians, that depends a lot not only on the base system but...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

The Swim skill has very specific uses, as do the other mechanics you referenced. Swimming through a sandstorm is not possible, as per the rules. Likewise it's not possible to use Listen to somehow Listen to the cosmos and hear the words that would persuade the chamberlain and it's definitely...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

This struck a chord with me. I realize entirely that you probably dislike players not having agency and likely disagree with Gygax, but in my case I loathe the idea. The very thought that players can't have agency especially given easy access to the material is absurd to me. Maybe a nudge...

Optimized Build Request Thread - ENWorld Version

Lockdown/trip tends to be easier to do with some fighter in it to get the necessary feats. Psywar is nice in that regard since it also gets fighter feats, though not as many. Getting used to a casters tends to be difficult, especially if you have such a large list as clerics do. Starting off...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Something to note with regards to diplomacy is that there is often a vast difference between a player's capability and their character's. Requiring someone to actually be persuasive while roleplaying their character might be too much to expect, especially once we get into superhuman territories...

Optimized Build Request Thread - ENWorld Version

Are you still intent on going lockdown, or would a different kind of play style work? I don't think clerics on their own are particularly powerful for lockdown/trip, but I suspect there are a few spells that could do the job. Did you have any ACFs in mind? With quite a bit of help from others...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

I don't think it's at all reasonable to say that he wants his character to always succeed, or always succeed in the exact manner he wants it to. The die roll could fail after all and he damn well knows it. However, he does want to be able to regularly use his character for things it was built...

According to the stuff at rhetological fallacies, a strawman is "Creating a distorted caricature of your opponent's argument, and then arguing against that."

    Robillar's Gambit

One of my DMs set an FB against us once. As a cleric I simply cast Sanctuary and he failed his Will save spectacularly, so he couldn't attack me. He then chose to go after the fighter, but the fighter had some sort of ring or whatever that gave him limited flight and thus he was able to stay...

Am I to assume you're able to do a different buyoff from the standard? Both feral and half-dragon are typically inherited templates, thus you'd be at LA+4 which can't be fully bought off before level 20 as the table on UA page 18 shows. There have been enough misunderstandings on how Feral...

Optimized Build Request Thread - ENWorld Version

You'll want to read the edit I added. Please include race and other stats because yes, those are meaningful. Especially if you've got a racial ability that the build needs, which you've implied there is with your reply to my suggestion of going Dragonborn. Finding stuff that has synergy with...

Optimized Build Request Thread - ENWorld Version

And what race would that be? You haven't provided the race, nor any actual stats. Why did you choose each class in the first place? Also, what feats do you have? What weapons were you thinking of using with tempest? Why do you want to go TWF in the first place? Keep in mind that weapons...

Rely, we're gonna need more information on that. What rogue ACF are you using? Where are the Dragonrider and Outrider from? Does the DM have house rules that change things up, such as using fractional BAB (which he absolutely should with gestalt unless he nixes the interpretation that...
