WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

I'm not surprised Perkins is retiring - he's been working either with the company as a freelance writer or direct employee for nearly 30 years. There's also always been a trend of designers leaving after they released a new edition. It's been very rare for the designer of a major edition to stay...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

It’s not about not liking the joke, it’s about thinking the joke was ever about them at all.

Wow, we have totally different experiences of that adventure then. For one, while we had a decent size group (6 or 7 players), we seldom used henchmen/hirelings except on rare occasions. Second, there was less of an assumption that because the rules didn’t explicitly say you could be stealthy...

Except I think the experience of playing Keep on the Borderlands under Basic rules or AD&D 1e/2e plays a lot differently than under 5e. The intent of KotB under earlier rules was that you had to sneak in, find allies, and treat the entire cave system as a stealth mission and do lots of hit and...

Gotcha. For me, playstyle in this context is talking about whether it’s a resource management game (equipment, encumbrance, rations, NOT HP and spells) versus a tactical skirmish game versus a storytelling heroic action (or storytelling horror or storytelling mystery, etc). To me the mechanics...

I agree with the rest of your post, but having recently looked at both of these modules, Dragons of Despair throws the same character in the PC’s way multiple times because they have to choose to escort her, no matter what. That was the way the book went, so that’s the way the module goes. The...

Can’t agree with that. I think 1e/2e largely failed at providing the kinds of subsystems that allowed for heroic action like you find in 5e or 13th Age. It was the attempts to bolt on the splatbooks and create multiclass kits to shore up for deficiencies in the fighter class in a heroic system...

WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

Can attest that there are companies out there that will try to contest even work done on free time done on personal equipment. There are people that vindictive out there, and their goal is to use nuisance suits and legal threats to discourage people from working in the same industry shortly...

    Superman | Sneak Peek

It’s been so long since we’ve had a Superman movie that felt like it was inspired by the actual comics. I’m hopeful for this.

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

This. I actually like read aloud text in modules when it doesn’t do this.

I don’t think that is a very feasible system. What’s more likely is you end up with a game that does one or maybe two of those things well, and the others poorly. You have any examples of any system that does this successfully?

I am not really surprised - I’m guessing there wasn’t much to move onto after 5e and 5.5.

Agreed. Our group has been playing a lot of OSR/NSR games the past year, and they've been so enjoyable. We're currently in the midst of a Mothership campaign, after also playing some Forbidden Lands, DCC, and Shadowdark, and the thing I've realized above all is that these are all different games...
