    Design & Development: Halflings [merged]

D&D came first, obviously, and then the novels. But then, interestingly enough, D&D started to change to emulate what had happened in some of the novels. Heh. Interesting indeed.

And the peck from Willow are basically hobbits, which are verboten.

    No more cone shaped powers?

Hmmm. You really think so? Interesting....

Kenders. Sigh. It's true that kenders seem to be the next step in the evolution of halflings. Gods help us all. I'm curious, though. Outside of Dragonlance, where have halflings begun to take over the role of "small mischevious troublemaker"? Are halflings really that prevalent in fantasy...

Humans are the young race, the ambitious ones, the ones who can thrive everywhere. Elves are the old ones, the forest dwellers. Dwarves are the souls of the mountains made flesh, the makers. These are archetypes that are present in much fantasy literature and many myths. Halflings do not...

D&D 4E Is my friend's unwillingness to try 4e irrational?

I don't want to try sky-diving, which would be a new experience for me. Am I irrational?

I will admit that halflings have never been a terribly popular race for adventurers, whether thay are in their hobbit-clone incarnation or otherwise. I wonder why the designers of 4e even bother having them in the game. I suspect they will probably be the least popular race in the new edition...

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. :p

Yes, Greyhawk has the Rhennee folk, which are actually from another world. What do you mean by "it didn't work"?

    D&D 4E I like 4E math.

I'm sorry for being snarky. I'll try to avoid that in the future. I experienced my worst day in over three years yesterday when I wrote that comment. I should have just avoided the boards altogether until I had calmed down a bit. It's just that with all the talk about weird geometry in 4e's...

Hmm. Interesting, then, that halflings have existed for so long in D&D as basically hobbit-clones then, ain't it?

    Design & Development: Halflings [merged]

Good point. Reinforces the fact that D&D 4e is all about the cool powers and ability to kick arse and take names and chew bubblegum and all that. The ability to play a heroic yet low-powered, un-cool character like Frodo or Sam or Bilbo is not a priority. Hmmm. I wonder if 4e halflings will...

We Used the new death and dying rules and it saved our ninja

Interesting fallacy there. :) Just because he hasn't come up with a better system yet doesn't mean that the current system is beyond critique.

We Used the new death and dying rules and it saved our ninja

Stop getting hung up on what version 3.5 did about death and dying. I think we can all admit that the situation with negative hit points in that game is not ideal. It is too predictable. There, I said it. Can we move on to 4e now? :p I don't think that the new rule is too metagamey...
