D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Specifically why I gave it two stars, instead of just one. :)

Ok, @Bedrockgames and @Mark Hope help me understand, exactly, what I'm missing with Feast of Goblyns. Because I'm just not seeing it. The jail scene makes no sense. "The jailer knows that Jaconos is a loup-garou and is concerned that the party and his men may now be infected with lycanthropy...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

It seems to me that the domain lord concept is, IMHO, the weakest concept in Ravenloft. Yes, it works for Strahd, but I find it to be overly restrictive and problematic. It's quite anti-climactic if any domain lord can never be defeated. That's not to say that beings such as these shouldn't...

Speaking of reviews... Bane of the Shadowborn (Dungeon #31) ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Let’s hop back into our wayback machines and head to 1991 and Dungeon #31. The domain here is unspecified, other than “The Shadowborn estate” which is an island. It is intended for levels 6-9. Having access to the “Darklords”...

Fixing those don't make it any better.

There is something I wanted to discuss further, however, and that's the mists themselves. The mist is, by it's nature, pretty heavy-handed. I never quite understood it too much in 2nd edition, since Forlorn is just west of Barovia - "what do you mean, I can't just travel to it by heading down...

lol I don't mind the segue. I think it's a good topic for exploration. I think I've already shown that a WHOLE bunch of these modules are, well, terrible. I have to wonder if all the people who played Ravenloft "back in the day" and ultimately came to despise it, were subjected to some really...

    The Ultimate Ravenloft Thread

I can't honestly remember what prompted me to want to run a Ravenloft campaign. My last campaign was a very traditional D&D game (5e rules, set in the Wilderlands of High Fantasy), so Ravenloft is a departure from where I've been for a while now. I think part of my was interested in the idea of...

Did I need to write a 2 page review for Horror's Harvest? No. Did I? Yes. Horror’s Harvest (Dungeon #38) ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ The science nerd in me has always been annoyed by Ravenloft’s cosmology, or the lack thereof, or whatever it is. Ravenloft is a solid, physical dimension within the ethereal plane...

D&D General Why 5E Adventurs Suck!!!!!

In the Ravenloft reviews thread, what struck me is how some of the older, classic modules that I really, really liked (reading at least; the jury is still out on how they run) (Evil Eye, and Circle of Darkness, for the record) are phenomenal reads, but I (as a 30+ year DM) are actually...

How do you keep your GM notes?

Colville sold me on the idea of OneNote, and I'm a convert. It's really quite a good tool. It has a bit of a learning curve in terms of making it work for you, but I do like it.

I mean, you're not wrong. Perhaps I'm judging some of these too harshly. This is a pretty minor thing in that particular module, and I get that Ravenloft can just kind of do that stuff, but more often than not, it just ends up feeling heavy-handed - kind of like the deaths of various NPCs that...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Yea, James beat me to it. Silver is there because it's canonical, but I like the idea of mithral being a nice substitute (or replacement) for purely silver weapons. Maybe the party acquires a silvered weapon and the werewolf just laughs at them and says "You've been listening to too many...

Book of Crypts – Corrupted Innocents ⭐ Another in the, mostly terrible, Book of Crypts. For 5th-7th level characters, this module is basically a railroad for the first 3 of its 10 total pages. The group is lost in the woods (whether they are all rangers and druids is irrelevant) and they hear...

A silver weapon would likely be far more common than a magic one. Especially since you could just melt down silver coins and coat a blade with it. In theory, at least. Silver arrows would also be similarly easy to make.

Totally doable, but you'll want to limit access to magic weapons and/or silver weapons.

D&D General Tangent from Vecna - How Many Actually Good Adventures Are There?

RA is universally praised, though VERY old school. Lesser known, but also great is Tombs of Abysthor. Very similar to RA (and by the same author and publisher).

D&D General Tangent from Vecna - How Many Actually Good Adventures Are There?

This thread where I'm currently reviewing Ravenloft modules from the 2nd edition era (mostly). I've found a handful I really like - Evil Eye, Spottle Parlor (from Dungeon #12), Sea Wolf (Dungeon #55), and House of Lament (from VRGtR). I might change my opinion of them after I run them, however...
