    D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook

5 out of 5 rating for D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook One of the things that stuck out in this edition of the PHB was that it was very well written. The texts are inspiring and evocative. Look at things like the backgrounds and you'll find character ideas jumping out at you.The rules are...

    D&D 5th Edition Monster Manual

4 out of 5 rating for D&D 5th Edition Monster Manual This is a very good MM.I would have given it five stars if the monster descriptions had been longer and more detailed. They are better than the one in the 4e MM, but shorter than 3e. And not at all as good as many of the 2e texts.

    Other useful conditions

Having a plethora of condition makes them an abyssal lot more difficult to remember, and obscures the common ones. Most of those things are situational modifiers that are only used in very specific circumstances.

    D&D 5E (2014) Old Ways of Playing

That's the way I ran it as well. I hated infrared vision - taken as really seeing heat would cause a tremendous amount of trouble, so you had to fudge it. (No, you cannot see the slightly warmer footprints left in order to track. No, I can't bother having hot air block your line of sight.) But...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Master FEAT

If somebody wants to take the feat without proficiency, why not just let them do it? Feels a little weird, but mostly stupid, on their part. No need for a house rule - we've all seen how long a thread can become if you introduce house rules without telling the players before hand. ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) rules for attacking with a shield?

There is nothing in the rules that say a shield is a light weapon. In fact it is quite contra intuitive. Thus you can normally choose whether you want to use it or your main hand weapon to attack with, but not both. There's nothing in the rules that say you can get AC from an improvised (or...

    D&D 5E (2014) rules for attacking with a shield?

Thank you for explaining how Shield Mastery works. In what way is shoving with your shield not a bash with it? Suddenly fighters with shields prefer the Two weapon style in order to add their ability modifier to damage with the shield. Shield masters get to pick whether they deal damage or...

    D&D 5E (2014) rules for attacking with a shield?

So with Shield Expert you always get a bonus attack with your shield, without penalty? No, that doesn't sound good. (Or rather, it sounds too good.)

    D&D 5E (2014) rules for attacking with a shield?

Bashing with a shield was an oft used tactic, historically. In D&D it is more debatable. To get an extra blow in as if using two weapons? As I said, and improvised weapon (even skilled it is hard to get a good attack in) and 1d4 damage, subject to all other rules for using two weapons. Using...

    D&D 5E (2014) rules for attacking with a shield?

Improvised weapon, 1d4 damage, and you're probably not proficient with it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Delayed Blast Fireball

I'm not exactly certain I understand what you are saying. Cast Delayed Blast Fireball, followed by a Forcecage around a creature, and then a Word of Recall on your whole party. Can't see what's wrong with that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Delayed Blast Fireball

You can cast as many spells as you have time to in the 1d4+1 turns, but you can only maintain concentration on one spell that requires it at a time.

    D&D 5E (2014) Delayed Blast Fireball

Yes, you can cast a Delayed Blast Fireball while time is stopped. But only one, as it requires concentration.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: Creating NPCs

Love that image! Random tables are very good for getting inspiration when trying to get memorable NPCs - as the blog clearly shows. His NPC creation from the random elements is very good. But what this news really showed me was the ID DM blog, it's full of good stuff! *subscribed*

D&D 5E (2014) The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

Chalk me up as one of those who really like it. To me it's pretty intuitive. You know how to use that stuff. I see weapon and armour proficiencies as tool proficiencies, and those have been around for a while. The proficiency is not only wearing and using them, but maintaining them, judging...

D&D 5E (2014) Rulings, Not Rules vs Cool spell usage

I've found myself thinking in several occasions that the spells are little too matter of fact. I'd prefer more of a description of what is going on, and then a short paragraph on the technicalities. And that goes for the monsters as well. I still miss the long 2e descriptions. (Even if some of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Old Ways of Playing

The life detection bit is very familiar, must have been in some article or somesuch. Or could it have come from some sort of fiction? I don't think it ever was in any book or monster write up.

D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

I think Perkins job description includes "slipping stuff so the social media has something to feed and buzz on". He's doing a great job, and I believe I can say we* love him for it. His job description also includes "putting on silly hats, make up, goggles and a red cape when DMing in...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

I still think it'll be an OGL, not The OGL. Anyhow it does sound promising, what little we know about it. The closer to The OGL it is, the better, I think.
