    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

The Paladin has been errata'd to specify any spell slot can be used. Not so with Eldritch Smite. It's Warlock slots only Jeremy Crawford has confirmed this as intended.

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

Agree that with the bonuses, the spectre is still weak. I've used it a couple of times. Consider the poltergeist if your DM allows. I pushed a foe with it into the druid's Wall of Thorns. The specter actually got a kill. Usually though it's fodder. It takes a hit, gives advantage or scouts.

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

For my 2 cents. I've used a Hexblade Human from 1st to 13th so far. My observations. I agree about Hex. It can be good but Hexblade's curse is often better. No concentration and regain hit points. Later maybe get a specter when you kill the foe. The specter you can get is weak but can be useful...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

The rule that until your turn in initiative order comes up you cannot use reactions does not say 'because surprise ends' and it does not say that your turn coming up ends surprise. I keep seeing people assume that it is so, but there is no statement RAW that this assumption is a rule. Your turn...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

The PHB Pg. 189 which describes surprise does not support the idea that your turn coming up in initiative ends being surprised. The order of operations on that page is that the DM determines surprise by comparing any stealth checks to passive perception. Then positions are determined, then...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

So (In the round when initiative is rolled), if you become surprised (as a consequence of not noticing the threat), you then cease to be 'staying surprised' on your initiative because you now perceive the threat after all? How did you become aware? You say that it causes not 'staying surprised'...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

Yes. The problem is that fast reflexes don't make you know that there is a threat to react to in the first place. The assassin makes a high stealth check but not a high initiative. Bummer. But if the target rolls a high initiative he still isn't aware of the threat which means that he can't move...

    D&D 5E (2014) Party vs Demogorgon

If they are all 20th agree. Demogorgon is going down. The Wizard and possibly the lore bard can do Wish and the cleric can use Divine intervention with an automatic chance of success. Being blinded is bad for the fighter and Barbarian but the casters don't care much at least they can still do...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

The player not the character rolls initiative. Rolling initiative means that the player is not surprised but that does not mean that his character isn't. Also, rolling high initiative is not rolling high on a perception check to perceive a threat.

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

I could also pose an example. The assassin rolls a 3 on initiative. The target is surprised by the assassin's stealth having rolled low on his perception check but rolls a high initiative. The target can't act or react on this turn. The assassin hits him before the target acts (and has surprise...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

Thanks Everyone. Your input helps. The PHB states that surprise is when one side is unaware of the threat. i.e. either the assassin is hidden or does not appear to be dangerous and hostility has not broken out. In the artist formerly known as the surprise round, one or both sides are attempting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

So, here's a DM question. With a rogue and particularly, the assassin, this has come up. The surprise round is the first round of combat when one side is not aware of the threat. So, the assassin strikes with a sneak attack before the target acts and gets a critical hit. What about surprise...

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] I Fought the Law and Won: The Rogue Guide

I like the guide. I might note that if your campaign uses flanking it's even easier to get advantage. Also on the assassin with surprise being so important, see if your DM is open to surprise other than in the first round such as duck around a corner, become invisible etc. 'Where'd he go?' and...

    D&D 5E (2014) The New D&D Book: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything!

No business can please every client. That's just how it is. If Wizards, or another publisher put out a book obtained from another dimension, authored by Tasha herself with real magical instructions in it on how to bring your character to actual life, etched the pages in gold and wrapped the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Assassin build Advice

We have an assassin in our campaign. Best advise I have is let your party members provide help and stay focused. What you're describing is a fighter type with a smattering of roguishness. If that's what you want, then there are fighter guides in the forums here that are excellent IMHO. As for...

Level Up (A5E) Do you want more monster complexity?

I use many henchmen type monsters out of the book, but a boss in an adventure is usually something unique. Personally, I'd like to see more customizing options like those for Cambions and Tieflings in the recent Avernus book. I've used those quite a bit in adventure design.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack question

Find a stealthy mount. JK But yes, if your mount has a melee attacka dn can make it, or if you have the mounted combatant feat, you have advantage and can sneak attack with a finesse weapon. That's why so many knights used rapiers from horseback. :-) That said, I've never seen a rogue in play...

D&D 5E (2014) Hunters mark and hex and immunity to non-magic damage

Agree with Crawford and the ruling there. The weapon damage from Hunters mark is increased by magic. That makes it magical damage.
