    CoS Warlock Spell Choice

Is Shield a Warlock spell? I don't see it listed as one.

Booming blade - how does it crit, and is this legit?

On the willingly moves part, I would let it work unless the effect says 'you move the target.' as opposed to 'the target then uses its move to'

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Everything Xanathar

On the Kensei Monk, Agile parry works when you make a melee attack as part of the attack action. Not with your bonus action. Remember you have to make your regular turn attack or one of them unarmed and have the weapon held to benefit. After 5th doesn't matter as much because you get Extra...

    Common Houserules?

We use flanking and so far have used the Fighter action surge being one attack instead of many. we use the timelines for making magic items as the maximum time it will take and let players make things in some cases between adventures, We start with a point buy and allow feats which I wish there...

    Monk Unarmed Strike

Thanks, P195 says you can make a melee attack with an unarmed strike but it doesn't specify if it counts as a weapon as matters with say stunning strike. The errata helps.

    Monk Unarmed Strike

Makes sense and is as I was leaning to ruling it. They really ought to make these things more clear in the verbiage. Is there errata for 5e on this?

    Monk Unarmed Strike

Question, Because the 5E Players Handbook isn't very clear and the Kensei has brought it up. Does the Unarmed Strike count as a weapon attack for purposes of abilities like the monk's Stunning Strike? In 4e the monk's Unarmed Strike was on the weapon table but was not a 'weapon'. It seems like a...

Player Bad Luck (Nearly) Ruins Boss Fight, News at Eleven

We DMs have all been there I think. I once had a party of 12th level or so fighting CR 1 Orcs as little more than a warmup. The fighter in heavy armor is on a warhorse using a lance and whiffs everyone. The first orc that attacked him got a crit with max damage, knocked him off the horse for...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Think Spare the Dying is a Problem?

We're in our 3rd campaign since 5th came out. Each party has had a cleric and no one has used Spare the Dying even once. I don't think it's a problem. The Death Yo Yo is possible of course but I haven't seen it happen. Guides on EN Char Op forums have called it Red meaning not good at all let...

Getting to 6 encounters in a day

I've not seen in game problems from varying the number of encounters as some DMs here seem to have seen. If you're finding that less than 6 encounters is a problem then purely from a practical standpoint, you have a couple of options that can still be fun. 1. have fewer but harder encounters, or...

Getting to 6 encounters in a day

It varies in my game. They usually have the freedom to move around in the world and decide where when to try to rest but You don't have to make it possible every time. I'm not saying attack them in the middle of the night in their skivvies every game but make it a possibility occasionally. Then...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can a Critical Hit miss?

The player knew the exact spot. That means that the enemy stealthing away doesn't get to trump the knowing. There's a hit on whatever was there when the hero succeeded in knowing the right square even if the hero can't see the result. Plus fun is rule zero. It's fun to consider 'OK, You shot...

Potent Cantrip: To "fix" or not to fix?

As was possible in past editions, consider allowing casters to create original spells. Make it take resources and time like making any other lasting magic item to use. A Cantrip or 1st level spell could be common and uncommon item costs. Then spell levels 2-4 Rare, 5-7 very rare, and 8-9 legendary.

    Is this railroading?

If they simply don't follow the thief, maybe have the thief steal from them again, or have someone approach them with a reward for catching a thief. In case the thief somehow evades them, have it be that he's paid by an old enemy to deliberately lead them into a trap. That gives him a reason to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

As a DM, that when 5e came about, the Insider online tools which Wizards charged for became obsolete but no update for 5e was created. i.e. the publisher was either going to lose subscribers to Insider as they moved away from 4e, or have fewer people moving to 4e. We wanted to play 5e and have...

    Character Optimization through play.

Equipment advise for every adventure every character, Rope. Cheap, light and comes up often. Can't tell you how many non-combat obstacles and even let's tie this guy up and leave him here moments needed rope over the years.

    OPTIMIZING KENSEI MONK

Fair enough, but Savage Attack with the weapon damage die going up as the monk level does could be good albeit only when you crit. If you stun often though you have more chance.

D&D 5E (2014) Is my DM being fair?

As a DM, I don't nerf things unless there's a mistake that we've made, or before the game begins. The exceptions are that if the player wants it the official errata way, I'll allow that. Otherwise, unless we find out we've been making a rules mistake, we'll make whatever change beginning with...

    OPTIMIZING KENSEI MONK

I like the idea of choosing Kensei melee weapons that can also be thrown for versatility. Hand Axe and Dagger come to mind. I like whip too for the reach in one hand. don't worry about the damage die because it scales as you level up. If you aren't set on Human consider a half Orc.
