When was the sword put out of use?

This is an interesting statement. I don't think it does take much training to use a knife "effectively". With some very basic instruction and practice in striking *through* a target rather than *at* it -- avoding the sort of pricking wounds seen in many knife fights -- and weapon retention, a...

    Evil Corp, Inc.

Ah, I assumed since you left them out of your original post that figuring out the provenances was part of the fun. Mine were: 4. Aerotech (Space: Above and Beyond) 5. Thorn Industries (The Antichrist's Conglomerate from "Damian: Omen 2")

Dominions 2 = Next Master of Magic?

Sounds amazing from the descriptions/reviews, but I'd never even heard of it. I think it's great that such games are still made: there appears to be no distribution of this product other than through on-line sales.

    Why are Hexblades mean?

I can readily envision one of my players making a Hexblade PC, but then my players are mostly overworked theater types who pay very little attention to the mechanics of the various classes . . . It's hard for me to even imagine one of my players figuring out the power differentials of differing...

    Firefly DVD review

I got them for Christmas as well, and I wish I had your discipline. My wife and I watched them all over the weekend . . .

Ebert gives "Master and Commander" thumbs up

I was thinking exactly this! I decided my opinion, based on meeting Mr. Crowe once, was somewhat irrelevant, but on balance I would have to agree that Crowe *plays* a good tough guy. Let's not forget he's an actor . . . and convincing us he's something he's not is his gift.

    I'm married! (and not drunk)

Congratulations! Sounds like you've never been to Salem though . . . I can't recommend Harrison's (and also, if only for its impressive if disorganized collection of various RPG stuff, the Red Lion Smoke Shop) enough. :)

    Matrix Reloaded: Restaurant Scene

Not that any of them did . . . Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies but never became President. The Founders who did were all born in the American Colonies. Interesting off-topic discussion: as I recall the Federalist had some pretty good contemporary arguments on why the Framers...

Appropriate Level for a Leader of 3,000 Cavalry

The last linked book, "The Mask of Command", is the only one I *have* read, but it is basically a very well-written confirmation of your view here. It provides some great illustrations of the various modes of leadership and how they changed through time. I particularly liked the use of...

Why don't Elves have any Kings?

The Erlking and Oberon are rather iconic as well!

Temple of Elemental Evil discussion thread (merged)

I've been enjoying this a good bit. In fact, it's kept me up too late the last three nights. The character creation alone is a lot of fun. I've tried out quite a few concepts, and I do hope they find other uses for the engine and 3.5e ruleset. With a few tweaks and corrections, they could...

Whot be yer pirate name, feller?

Lots of skippers! You need some cutthroats of uncertain loyalties to round out the crews. I'll step up to the plate. Since I only appear in a few brief but colorful scenes, I can fill two roles (with suitable costume changes): the murderous ruffian known as "Bilgebelly" and the sly, former...

3.5 - Is your game better?

Markedly better, I'd say. Both as a DM and as a player, the changes to haste and the buff spells are very welcome. I am also quite happy with the culling and clarification that went on with respect to skills.

    Feint feat?

"Improved Feint" in the 3.5 PHB allows you to feint as a move equivalent action, if I recall correctly.

    LG, sex and Star Trek

The emphasis on "long-term" might not be so strong in a slave-owning society (similarly-aligned perhaps), which might fairly be characterized as LN or LE and inhabited by persons largely of similar alignment. Notionally, the civilizations of ancient Babylonia -- as well as many later...

    Worst sequel in movie history.

You beat me to it - I read through the entire thread with building anticipation that I could be the first to mention this. I have soft spot for Escape from New York, and my disappointment at this "sequel" (in many ways a more expensive remake) knew no bounds. Kurt Russell on a surf board was...

    Are tumble Checks too easy?

We seem to be recycling good arguments here, but not making any headway! On page one, I tried to make the same basic point, thinking it was a useful analogy: "A first level wizard stand[ing] next to her enemy can "cast defensively" and not provoke an attack of opportunity, whether the enemy is...

    Are tumble Checks too easy?

This was basically my point with my combat casting analogy. It's interesting to read some of the "solutions" (running the gamut from simple to overly complicated), but I still don't see that using tumbling to avoid attacks of opportunity is any cause for concern. In more than two years of...
