The Escapist on D&D Past, Present, and Future

It's an interesting series of articles and the input here from many has been insightful. However, in order to stem any misgivings anyone may have about the future of D&D, specifically 5th edition, I'd like to make the following announcement: In anticipation of my imminent hiring as President...

    Dear Mike & Monte

Might have been mentioned, I've not read all 10+ pages, but I'll toss it out there anyway. Format the rules to be available in more than just paper and .pdf. Consider .mobi, .epub, and other formats which would allow users with tablets and readers to more conveniently utilize the ruleset.

The DM Burnout and How to Get Past That: Advice?

This is a great thread molepunch. Thanks for starting it. I won't echo what others have said, and simply add that it's my experience that in the 35 years I've been DMing, burnout is inevitable. My trick is that I usually take a break from running the game and spend a lot of time catching up on...

Jeff Grubb on WotC and layoffs

Layoffs happen. With that in mind were I an Evil Minor Godling with the power and the notion to, in this age of internet communication, make a bad PR situation even worse for WoTC, I would arrange it so that they would have to commit to their lay-offs at... ...Christmas time. Yup.

What RPG Products Have You Gotten Recently?

Just purchased a hardback copy of Green Ronin's Advanced Gamemaster's guide for D20 at Paizo. For $5.

Pathfinder 1E Paizo's box of beasts

Okay, okay. This is a great idea and I just thought of it. Ready? What you do is you make a few monster tokens special in some way, let's say that you only make a few of them - you can call them something like "not common cardboard" or something. Okay. Here's the brilliant part: You sprinkle...

Do you want/are you ready for a D&D 5th edition?

Do I want it? Yes. Am I ready for it? Yes. All because I have a soft spot in my heart for D&D. The *real* question should be: Do I need it? The answer to that, is simply No.

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

Sorry to hear this. Best of luck to these two talents.

What's the most you've ever spent on a single RPG-related item?

I think the most I've spent would be the $100 I dropped for the first Game of Thrones RPG (I got it for Christmas from my wife, so in the end I guess I paid for it). The very moment I cracked the cover on the book for the first time, the company that produced it went belly up. :( I do, however...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Online MMORPG Announced

Hmmm... I'm thinking 2015 or 2016 as a launch date.

Pathfinder 1E Is Paizo the new Palladium? (It isn't!)

Agreed, IronWolf. Marketing might make you take a look. Quality of product makes you a customer.

    Slavicsek to leave WotC

While I did not like 4e (forgivable, just not my cup of tea), and am still a bit disgusted in the way fans of 3e and previous editions were treated and denigrated in the roll-out to 4e (unforgivable), in this economy it is a difficult thing to lose ones job. Best of luck to Bill and the others.

    DCC RPG BETA, June 8th

Posted by Joseph in the DCC forums: "The Free RPG Day product will indeed be available for download and print purchase after Free RPG Day. Probably about a week afterward -- I like give the stores a little bit of time to "bask in the exclusivity;" after all, they did spend money to promote the...

Are things like Intimidate/Bluff/Diplomacy too easy?

Whats funny is that I understand the "why" of it, and how something like this was needed for the game to penetrate into new audiences and grow. I generally approved of many of the related decisions from 3e. But that one was a philosophical deal-breaker for me. I just stuck with my house-ruled...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder miniatures (Pre-Painted Plastic Miniatures)

Unless I missed an announcement somewhere, this is not a "line" of miniatures. It's a single set that is to be marketed with the new basic PF set. Unless you toss a lot of dopplegangers at your adventuring group, I can't think of a reason to buy more than one set. That said, I think anyone...

Are things like Intimidate/Bluff/Diplomacy too easy?

It was an attempt in 3e to substitute "rule-play" for "role-play". The problem being that role-playing such a situation involves a certain skill-set from the DM and players which not everyone has. This deficiency was seen not as a player/DM problem, but as a problem with the game itself. So...

have you ever played without maps?

I used maps sparingly in my home-brewed 1st ed setting. I had one for my own use, just jotted this and that there and here. You know. I did use a battle-mat more than plain maps, but again, sparingly. You know you have that ratio about right when you can see the eyes of your players light up...

    D&D 5th Edition!!! (WITH POLL!!!)

My selection isn't on the list, as it is a bit of a fantasy (at least until I make my first billion), but here it is: I would take 5ed away from Hasbro and fund it so that I can give it to the designers and writers who have, over these many years, shown love and dedication to the game despite...

Review of Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale by Atari

The video game resembles 4.0 as much as 4.0 resembles 3.5. 10-4.
