To Kill or Not to Kill (PCs): That is the Question...

It depends. When the characters were crossing the rope bridge to get into the Forge of Fury and the druid lost his balance, I gave him an extra reflex save to catch the rope. It seemed a pointless way to lose a character. However, when the PC's were attacking an ancient temple trying to stop...

    Les Miserables

Be careful. Let's not confuse the Funky Bunch with the Backstreet Boys. Mark was never much of a singer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eSN8Cwit_s&ob=av3e

    Unengaged Players

Like Crothian said, talk to them. I had the same concerns with my group. We had all played together under a different DM and felt we had too many choices. We could go in absolutely any direction, pursue any shiny object, and take on any challenge. But we were paralyzed by indecision because we...

    Steel Dragon's "Tales of Orea"

ahem Ok, you've had enough of a break. It's time to get back to entertaining me. Thank you.

    The Player/GM relationship.

It's larger than simply a game issue, it's a social issue. Any time members of a larger group of friends start dating, it has the potential to affect the dynamics of the group. The other members will therefore be sensitive to it. I think the advice to have a trusted member of the group key an...

    Lousy Poker Face?

<Must spread some XP around> Definitely this. I grin and fake-roll all the time. My players sometimes joke that I'm only rolling for show, but they're wrong about that more often than not. When they ask specific questions about some situation, I try not to answer their questions. Instead, I...

    Morrus on ... XP

We play 3.5 D&D and the PCs level "roughly whenever I feel like it." Before I started DMing for the group I created an elaborate Excel spreadsheet to track and allocate XP. While setting up the spreadsheet was fun (I'm an Accountant!!!), I quickly learned that tracking XP was not fun at all...

    Recurring Bad Guys

The one my players currently hate the most is a 2,000 year old Ghost cleric. The cool thing about ghosts is that they just don't stay dead! They first met him in a temple and after a tough fight, killed him (they thought). Months later, he used his Malevolence ability to take over a friendly...

"Ouch! My toes!" - Rangers & Druids

I'm not saying anything about the Warlock as a class. I haven't played it enough to know how powerful it is compared to other classes. All I'm saying is keep the third player in the discussions so he/she won't get left out or feel that their PC is now underpowered. It has nothing to do with...

"Ouch! My toes!" - Rangers & Druids

Hopefully, you're already doing this, but keep the Warlock's player involved in the conversations. The last thing you need is for the Druid's and Ranger's players to be happy then have the Warlock's player feeling left behind. You're balancing all three characters in the party, not just two.

    Share Something Cool

I've plugged this before, and I know many others use it, but I love Dave's Mapper. davesmapper.com Randomly generate maps instantly. I use it when I want to find a map that matches some vague idea I have. Or I'll regenerate maps until I find one I think looks interesting, and then build an...

How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

I'm neutral. There's still too much we don't know. How modular is modular? What are they trying to mimic from previous editions, and how will those aspects work alongside the aspects mimicked from other editions. And to be honest, WOTC has been long on promise and short on delivery lately. I...

D&D 5E (2014) What big thing is supposed to be next week?

I agree, I loved Williams' score. I'm thinking more the band in Jabba's palace and the Ewok celebration music at the end of Jedi. Sorry for the confusion.

D&D 5E (2014) What big thing is supposed to be next week?

Yay. :erm: We'll get: * bigger explosions * worse music * tons of background NPCs magically added in to every scene * every scene/detail that was edited out of previously released material will be added back in "because we can" * forced, unnatural, hamfisted love scene dialog will be added...

    [December] What are you reading?

Right. It does illustrate the differences, IMO, of some of the WOTC writers of the time. Some of the books are great mindless fun, while others made me yearn for the good old days of reading Accounting textbooks.

    [December] What are you reading?

This whole collection is sitting on my shelf begging to be re-read. Some were ok, some... less so. IIRC Savage Caves was one of the better ones and set up characterizations that were further explored in some of the later books. What did you think of it?

    Weather in your Games?

There's a random generator on the Pathfinder SRD page here Random Weather Generator - Pathfinder_OGC. It's not the most elegant program, but it's handy.
