    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: Subclasses

The issue with Gladiator is that we often use the same word for different concepts, and then that makes life complicated when we try to create mechanics for those concepts. For example, can a wizard be a Knight? Yes, if Knight refers to the social rank, granted by the Queen. No, if Knight...

Reminds me of 2E's kits, really.

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Morons and Salads

I think the problem is that they are polling for options without discussing the costs. For example, what if the poll had been: "Do you want us to redesign the slaadi, or create a new chaotic aberrant monster?" I think that, when the question is phrased like that, the majority would go for the...

What ficitonal character has been "reimagined" the most?

I think the line gets a little blurry for some of the really archetypal characters/stories. Consider Romeo & Juliet. West Side Story is clearly a reimagining of R&J, but does that mean that every story of two lovers from warring families is a re-imagining of R&J?

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Morons and Salads

I agree. The way I see it is that there are 4 or so choices: 1. Change modrons and put them in MM1. 2. Same modrons and put them in MM1. 3. Change modrons and put them in later MM. 4. Same modrons and put them in later MM. I like option 4. Keep modrons the same, but put them a later monster...

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Morons and Salads

Stepping back from the specific cases of modrons and slaadi, I wonder if there is a more general question here: What should we do with polarizing monsters? Some monsters are loved and hated in equal measure. Keeping them as is caters to the people that love them. Changing them caters to the...

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Morons and Salads

On the other hand, how often do modrons show up in standard D&D? I think there's room for the goofy, whimsical style of modrons, given that they're very rare, and as a nod to the game's history (and a beloved setting).

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Morons and Salads

I think these two monsters point out the folly of overarching monster types. Given the choice of "fiend" or "aberration" for slaadis, I guess I would vote for aberration. But really, they're just slaadis. Not really fiends, not really aberrations. Same thing with modrons. Constructs are the...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_of_the_Flat_Earth That seems reasonably thorough.

Imagine there was another Earthlike planet in our system

I wonder about the assumption that radio is the point when we find out about each other? How powerful would a telescope have to be to see the Martian surface? Things like large roads, the lights of a large city, the Great Wall of Mars. Could the telescopes of the 19th Century have observed the...

Imagine there was another Earthlike planet in our system

It's probable that neither side would be able to conquer the other's planet. There's simply too many defenders (6 billion) and it would cost way too much to send an invasion force capable of holding territory. That being said, there's still something worth fighting for: the rest of the solar...

Wheel of Time....good series to read after Hobbit/LotR?

Yes. But in my opinion, the strengths outweigh the weaknesses. Something can be terribly flawed and still enjoyable, still worth watching or reading.

Wheel of Time....good series to read after Hobbit/LotR?

I disagree with the above in some respects. If you stick with it, it is an excellent long series, now that it has finished. But the point about the middle dragging is true. Books 7-9 in particular are terribly slow.

D&D 5E (2014) First Level Hit Points Need to Increase

I think Son of Meepo was talking specifically about dying before getting an action, not dying in general.

D&D 5E (2014) First Level Hit Points Need to Increase

In general terms, I think it would be better to define the problem in terms of attacks. Should a single spell or attack from a 1st level character be able to one-shot another 1st level character? 1. Yes 2. No 3 Yes, on a crit (or low probability) I lean towards No, simply because it's no fun...

D&D 5E (2014) First Level Hit Points Need to Increase

I think you are reading too much into this. The idea is not that the one goblin remains a threat at 5th level, but maybe 10 goblins do. In the unbounded system, it is unlikely that those 10 goblins can even hit the PC. So most of the goblins miss, and the few who do connect do pitiful damage. In...

    Armor Taken From The Battlefield

Not sure about real life, but are you going to have magical armor in this game? If you are, will someone be able to use an enemy's +1 armor? It's pretty traditional than if an enemy uses magical arms and armor it's considered loot for the PCs after the battle. If you are going to use magical...

    What if races leveled up?

Does this issue actually exist for races other than Elves? Humans don't really get "humanier" as they age. Dwarves don't really seem to do this either, nor Hobbits. Bilbo at 111 doesn't really seem to be "more hobbity" than he was as a young hobbit. In other literature, I don't really see this...

    Rules for improve-by-doing skills

One idea to keep it in check might be to shift skill points instead of increasing them. If you spend time picking locks, your lockpicking skill increases, but another skill (perhaps the one used the least if you can keep track of it) decreases. Thus activities shape your character, but you...
