D&D 5E (2014) Are ranged attacks too good in 5e?

I do wonder what D&D would look like if casting and ranged attacks were a full-round action, while you could move and make a melee attack in the same round. That alone would make melee much stronger, but it would also make reactive actions/abilities that punished a caster/ranged for casting next...

D&D General What is a Ranger? A miserable pile of secrets! (+)

That would be a nice Ranger ability: Tracked Enemy: If the Ranger spends 5 minutes carefully studying a creature, she gains a bonus when fighting that creature's species in combat. A Ranger can only track one species at a time. Studying a creature can include: visual observation, examining a...

    D&D General Expanding a 3-player campaign to a 6-player with 3 newbies

I think you should let the 3 experienced players make new characters for the one-off. That way everyone starts together and has fun together. Encourage them to try something very different from their main character. Ideally, the one-off will take the new characters to 2nd or 3rd level. That way...

D&D 5E (2014) Ways for a demon to go incognito around a paladin, without being unfair to a player

Here's a question: if the paladin cannot use Divine Sense in this situation, in what situation could she use Divine Sense? Only when it's already really obvious that a demon is present? It seems like if you go to lengths to nullify Divine Sense here, there's not much point in having the ability...

D&D General MtG Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Spoiler Thread

It doesn't go to the discard pile (graveyard) when you equip. It becomes attached to the creature. The big difference is that you can pay the equip cost to move it to another creature. As well, if the creature dies, the equipment stays in play and you can equip a different creature.

Well, WotC certainly knows their audience:

D&D General What would you call a cross between a Diviner and a Psychic?

Esper is a decent alternate name for psychics.

WotC Strixhaven sounds like it'd be a nice mini-setting for D&D

It's a little more complicated than that. In Magic, the 10 permutations already exist as the guilds of Ravnica. Strixhaven is essentially a second-take on five of those permutations. For example, Red-White (RW) on Ravnica is the Boros guild, which is kind of a militia preserving order by...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you find alignment useful in any way?

I think there are actually two traditional Alignment systems, and I like both of them. However, I am not certain that they co-exist easily or well. First, I like Alignment as cosmic forces. Having Evil be a palpable force in the universe makes for some excellent games. Using circles of...

D&D 5E (2014) Players Killing Players for stupid reason

I think most of you guys are being too hard on @RickTheFox. He made a character with an interesting quirk. However, he did make an underlying assumption, that the quirk would only be triggered by NPCs (who are fair game). However, the quirk got triggered by a party member, which he did not...

D&D General On Skilled Play: D&D as a Game

Most of the comments are about how players play in skilled play, but it's also worth looking at how the DM "wins" in skilled play. In my mind the DM is like a handicapper in horse races. She doesn't win if the players lose. That's too easy to do. She wins if: The players almost lose. The...

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

I actually really like those types of dystopias, where the reader recognizes it as dystopia, but most of the people living in it are happy with the system. We, by Yevgeny Zamyatin is one of my favorites. I find them more interesting than dystopias which are maintained by force by obviously evil...

D&D 5E (2014) Can a caster tell if someone saved or not against their spell?

I'd be inclined to letting the caster know that it failed. The more unreliable something is, the less likely it will be used. Charm Person is already pretty unreliable, and now you're adding a chance that it will backfire horribly on your group. Not knowing if Charm Person failed feels like a...

D&D General Give me potential nannies for three brass dragon wyrmlings

I'm a sucker for the classics, so a young noblewoman fleeing a marriage being arranged by her wicked uncle in different city (obviously she doesn't tell the PCs this). She's pretending to be a governess and looking for a place to lie low. Naturally the uncle and/or bridegroom are sending out...

Level Up (A5E) What would you call a 'Warlord' class? (+)

Hmm, maybe it's a non-American thing, but when I hear Marshal, I think of the high military rank, Field Marshals, etc. I guess Americans would associate the word more with your US Marshals who are like law enforcement, as I understand it?

Level Up (A5E) What would you call a 'Warlord' class? (+)

I'm kind of leaning towards Commander. The biggest issue is that most of the words we reserve for the concept at the height of its power. Warlord, General, Marshal, Strategos, etc. Commander at least is a low-level rank, lower than Captain. So having a low level Commander doesn't sound so...

    D&D 5E (2014) What if a curse isn't a curse?

The magic fountain doing stuff to them is fair game, it's the world acting on the character and changing them. But that's different than the DM overriding the player's original vision, and "restoring" another one.

    D&D 5E (2014) What if a curse isn't a curse?

I think this is a bad idea. Players get dominion over their characters, the DM gets the rest of the world. Here you're trespassing on their domain, on who their character really is. If a player wants to play a character with a facial disfigurement, or green eyes, etc. that's their call. It's...

D&D 5E (2014) Let 'em live or die?

In my opinion, the character death part is a red herring. This question is really about DM precedent. This is the second death. The first death was fudged. Does the second player have a reasonable expectation that this death will be fudged too? Is there a possibility that she will regard the...
