    A Thought on Turn-Based Movement

I agree with D'Karr. Movement in combat rules really only work for positioning within the combat. They don't work for someone trying to avoid combat or running away. Even a straight, "he moves X distance away. I move X towards him", you can't catch up. In my opinion, dealing with the guard...

The practical impact of who's granting the cleric's spells is...what exactly?

It gives a structure for saints and angels. People (especially Catholics) often pray/ask for a specific saint or angel to intercede on their behalf, even though the saints/angels are not gods. And different saints and angels have different areas of responsibility. Remember that though the...

    Telekinetic on trial for murder

The prosecutor still has to give some theory of how the death occurred. Otherwise this is the medical examiner on the stand: Defense attorney: Why did the victim die? ME: His head exploded. Defense attorney: What caused his head to explode? ME: The defendant's telekinetic abilities. Defense...

    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A February 14th: Lines, Finding Spells & Fighter Identity

The thing about warriors that is missing is that the traditional destiny/identity outside of combat is to become leaders of men. Kings, warlords, generals, emperors. Look at the list provided: "Gimli, Lan Mandragoran, Leonidas, Madmartigan (yeah, that’s right, I made a Willow reference), the...

    Nemesis Destiny's Houserules Thread

I'm not certain I understand your Death Flag mechanic. Could you perhaps add an example?

    Death, as a plot hook

Seems too complicated for me. You have a theme: no resurrection. Stick to the theme and don't weaken it. I'd disallow Revenance. Have Revivification be the only spell allowed. Perhaps consider slightly boosting Revivification to must be cast within a minute of death (10 rounds). That's still...

What's the cheapest E-reader (type thingy) that can read PDFs?

I think most E-readers on the market right now should handle PDFs. One word of caution. PDF seems to be the format that requires the most processing power to view. So the cheapest E-reader might greatly struggle with PDFs. I know my old E-reader would sometimes take 10s or more to change the page.

    Windows 8?

Heh, I got a new machine recently with Win 8. I tried it out and was wondering what all the fuss was about. It seemed pretty normal to me. Then I realized that the store, NCIX, installed Classic Shell when they built the machine. It was the only thing other than the OS that they installed. I...

    Discourse

Right, and I totally understand that. But Atwood put a lot of thought into exactly how you get the best possible answers on a Q&A site, and StackExchange reflects that. It was not just a slightly improved version of what came before, it was a leap forward. Whereas vBulletin is essentially the...

    Discourse

Jeff Atwood (guy who made StackOverflow/StackExchange) and his team released his new forum software, Discourse, today. http://www.discourse.org/ Since you're doing the whole rebuilding Enworld thing right now, might be something worth taking a look at. StackExchange was very well built, had...

    D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene-Framing; A Good Approach to D&D 4e

The thing is that in CAW you have to obtain the resource before the scene where you use it. Like if you need ten barrels of gunpowder to blow up Parliament, you have to obtain the barrels first. So do you handwave obtaining the gunpowder, and skip right to scene where you are fighting off the...

D&D 5E (2014) The evolution of Charisma and Wisdom

I'm suggesting that scenarios where Perception is greatly different than Wisdom are uncommon, and generally require physical disabilities, which are outside the norm for adventurers. So splitting one stat into two is overkill. It's far easier to apply a penalty when applicable in specific...

D&D 5E (2014) The evolution of Charisma and Wisdom

I disagree. I think in, general, abilities get weird when disabilities come into play. For example, let's say a rogue with 18 Dex has his hand chopped off. Does his Dex go down? I think think disabilities like the ones you've mentioned should not change ability scores, but they should "trump"...

A strange question about wielding a big sword

I'm not specifically sure what the rules say, but I sympathize with the DM. There does seem like there should be some sort of penalty for attempting something like that with a 2H weapon, even just to get the weapon back into proper position.

    D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene-Framing; A Good Approach to D&D 4e

But Anna is the one who successfully made the attack, not the orc. I think you run into issues like "if Anna takes a step back, why does the orc have to do the same".

It's not out yet, but City of Steam looks pretty interesting.

    D&D 4E Pemertonian Scene-Framing; A Good Approach to D&D 4e

This thought popped in my head while reading the discussion on CaGI. Imagine a game with the following situation (one dimensional to simplify things): 1 2 3 4 - A X - A is a PC named Anna, X is an orc. The two are engaged in a sword fight. Now this game has a rule that if a combatant...

    D&D 5E (2014) 28/1/13 L&L D&DNext goals part Four

Well, Mearls specifically states--and you even quoted him--that "It's kind of a laundry list, and there's no guarantee that everything will be ready at launch, so it's more of a wish list." So I don't really see the problem.

Wheel of Time: A Memory of Light (Spoilers!)

(Posting my thoughts in a second post to avoid tooltip spoilers.) I liked it a lot. It was a good, worthy ending for the series. Sure there's bits and pieces that could be nitpicked, but I think the emotional arc was true. One thing I really liked was that the villains were worthy villains...
