    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Saltiness

I vaguely remember one of the earlier editions (maybe 2E?) explicitly saying that magical armor was comfortable to wear full-time.

    D&D General BBEGs shouldn't miss.

Well, you'd have to figure out something for the players who choose to invest in defensive abilities. Not much point in Heavy Armor and Shield if the boss always hits you. One idea might be to make boss attacks like spells where you "save for half". The boss does half damage on a miss. But the...

WotC Gale Force 9 Sues WotC [Updated]

The updated link doesn't seem to be correct. It's pointing back to this thread.

D&D 5E (2014) Ranger Features to Enhance Natural Explorer and Favored Enemy

Heh, I came into this thread to recommend Minigiant's concept from so long ago. Still the best iteration of Ranger that I've seen. Though I preferred the bonuses based on favored enemy rather than favored terrain. Terrain was effective but bland. But the favored enemy bonuses showed how the...

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

Perhaps have becoming prisoner be part of the plan. The party needs to get to the prison, but they don't know where it is. So they get choose to get taken prisoner. See if they can to figure out a way to make their equipment accessible while being a prisoner.

D&D 5E (2014) As a Player, why do you play in games you haven't bought into?

Regarding the Ghosts of Saltmarsh, example, the DM could have said that all characters get free proficiency in sailing because boats will be so important. There was no need to force characters to spend resources on a proficiency they may not want.

D&D 5E (2014) As a Player, why do you play in games you haven't bought into?

I think a lot of DMs don't really appreciate how little freedom players actually have. Their "sphere of influence" is very small compared to the DM. Coming up with your own character is one of the major attractions for a player, and I think a lot of the proposed campaign restrictions infringe...

    D&D 3.x Are You Still Playing D&D 3.0?

I think 3.5 was influenced by the Magic-side of WotC. I think they saw it more like releasing a new core set, where people would still use their 3.0 books (with the fixed rules) and upgrade as they pleased, mixing and matching books. Instead the community treated 3.0 and 3.5 as quasi-separate...

Dragonlance Dragonlance's Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Are Suing WotC for Breach of Contract

It's not like WotC's previous editorial team (from last year) were a bunch of social conservatives. They've always been fairly left-wing and sympathetic, in addition to being women. I'm finding it hard to believe that there is something acceptable to that team, that is unacceptable to the new...

Dragonlance Dragonlance's Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Are Suing WotC for Breach of Contract

I don't think it's a normal "Work-for-Hire" where WotC hired Weis/Hickman. It looks like a 3-way agreement between Weis/Hickman, Random House, and WotC, where WotC has to approve the book, but doesn't own it.

Dragonlance Dragonlance's Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Are Suing WotC for Breach of Contract

It's an interesting question as to whether WotC can withdraw approval like this. According to the complaint, the timeline goes like this: Jan 2020 - WotC approves Book 1 Jun 2020 - WotC replaces the editorial team (2 women, btw) with a new team Aug 2020 - WotC refuses approval Seems harsh for...

D&D General Are you a DM?

But even for those people, there's a period of time before they DM that first game, which might even be a couple of years long. Like this poll is showing that no one comes to EN World in their pre-DM period, only in a post-DM period.

D&D 5E (2014) Should the Hexblade Patron be Banned?

I really doubt they will update the PHB with mechanical changes. WotC tried it with 3.0 to 3.5, and it was received really, really badly.

D&D General Are you a DM?

Well, that's the most lopsided vote I've seen in a while.

D&D General Naming the Barbarian? [added battlerager]

What about taking both the Fighter and the Barbarian, and transmuting them to Soldier and Warrior? Soldier has more connotations of formal training, fighting in a group, and fighting defensively. While Warrior has connotations of individualism, more offense, which is fitting for the current...

D&D General Alternatives to lich or vampire?

I think you should stick to vampire. Part of undeath is dealing with the drawbacks, that living forever is worth the drawbacks, even as the drawbacks change you. Creating an undead variant which is basically "human, but living forever" is not a good idea.

D&D 5E (2014) Finding someone by scent in a city

I say you let it work. At the very least have the dogs take the PCs to an area where they can find eyewitnesses to keep them going on the trail.
