Science Fiction: Greatest TV Shows Part III

I remember so wanting to like Dark Angel when it was first released and it just not grabbing me. Maybe I should give it a try again.

    Blue Beetle Trailer #1 (2023)

I am looking forward to it although I probably won't see it in the theatre. I don't care so much that the DCEU is done, and possibly Beetle's future in the franchise, in favor of Gunn's DCU as long as the movie is entertaining. I still would have preferred a Ted Kord as Blue Beetle movie though.

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

Yeah, you are right. That's why, since you are a current viewer, I am willing to take your word for it. Unfortunately, I'm just not willing to invest the time in a series that I thought had 3 really bad seasons in the hope the final two may be better.

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

I would have said I agree with Morrus on this, but I haven't watched Discovery since the end of season 3. If things have changed since then that's nice to hear but unfortunately if the show couldn't win me over after three seasons I'm going to have to take your word for it.

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

I agree about Strange New Worlds, I think it's the best Star Trek since TOS. The lessons that P+ seems to have learned are why I am willing to give Starfleet Academy a chance even though my expectations aren't high. I will freely admit that P+ has shown my expectations to be wrong before...

Gen-X humor and references are the best kind of humor and references. And no, you can't ask how old I am. ;)

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

I agree 100%. Picard season 3 has been a joy, I think even those who disliked the first two seasons might enjoy it. Lower Decks is SO funny, I look forward to every new season. Prodigy has also been good, and occasionally pretty intense and dark for a kids show.

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

For what it's worth, I can't recommend Strange New Worlds highly enough. It's the best Star Trek since TOS, in my opinion.

Discovery. The first two seasons were pre-TOS era and then the ship travelled to the 32nd century for the last three seasons.

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

I'm almost there with you. Discovery, in my opinion, is so awful (at least the first three seasons were, I gave up after that) that I have little desire to see anything related to it. That said, I will give it at least a few episodes to win me over but it's going to be a tough sell. On top of...

    Picard Season 3

I just watched episode seven. I will say I have been enjoying the show, but I am getting tired of having to put blackout curtains on my windows, turn off all of my lights and turn the brightness on my TV up to even start to see the picture. It seems to be a trend in modern Trek (and other shows...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

It looks like we are just going in circles so I will just address some of your reply. I specifically wasn't making generalizations. I spoke to my experience and even said that you and I had different ones. Since I wasn't making a generalization, I feel like I should be surprised if I am taken...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

Once again, I have to disagree, but you are reinforcing the point I was making. Not everyone lived where you lived or shared your experiences. I know I didn't. I lived in a small town and was exposed to very few gamers and had no reason to think others were playing the game any differently than...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

I'm not sure if you are responding to me since you didn't quote me, but that is kind of the point I was making. People assume the way they view the world is the norm and when justifying/defending that there is often a lot of over-generalization and lack of nuance. It seems to me that when people...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

Just remember, some day you will be the old fart talking about the good old days of 5E (or whatever edition) and the people playing 9E will hate how you view your glory days playing the game. People tend to naturally assume that those around them view the world the same way they do. It's why a...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

Is this really that common? More importantly, does it even account for a significant percentage of old school gamers?

D&D General What About Those Other D&D Settings?

Even though I started playing D&D in the early 1980's I have never heard of some of the settings mentioned by the OP. Also, I haven't played D&D since 3.x ended so I don't really have any skin in this game but of those I recognize I'll share my thoughts. Al-Qadim: Arabian Adventures - I really...

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

If Mamoru Oshii was fine with Scarlett Johanson's casting I guess I don't have an issue with it either. https://www.vulture.com/2017/03/ghost-in-the-shell-anime-whitewashing-scarlett-johansson.html

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

Are they? It's possible but I don't think that is always the case. If a publisher decides to remove content from their game they are well within their rights to do so because it's their game. However, I think they are just as likely to be making these changes because of changes in societal norms...

What are you reading in 2023?

I went back to finish The Chronicles of the Black Company. I am just finishing up The Books of the South and am really enjoying it. Next, I am either going to read Myth America: Historians Take On the Biggest Legends and Lies About Our Past or The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe: How to Know...
