    D&D 5E (2014) do CRs seem a bit arbitrary?

Yeah, it's almost like we need a "z axis" to determine how difficult a monster could be, given certain external factors. For example, a cave bear is a cave bear. You can generally look at that creature and know what to expect from the stat block, and CR should be fairly accurate given nearly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Druids in 5e: how do I optimize them?

The logic behind those suggestions is that a Moon druid is considered pretty ridiculous at low levels. Their wildshape ability to transform into a CR 1 creature at level 2 is amazing; it's like getting 30+ temp HP and some decent close-range attacks, all for a bonus action. (Check out the dire...

    D&D 5E (2014) do CRs seem a bit arbitrary?

This is a good point, too. "CR 2" seems almost like an average for these creatures; if you get the drop on them and can fight at range, they're like CR 1/8. If you don't, or have to fight in cramped quarters, they're like CR 4.

    improving the ranger

Looking at a 5.0 ranger, they seem to have very little party synergy at upper levels. They also seem to lack a clear role. A dex-based fighter can out-damage them and cover several of their skills; a rogue can out-damage them and cover pretty much any of their skills and then some; a druid is...

D&D 5E (2014) Party optimisation vs Character optimisation

I knew when I wrote it that sentence would get picked on, but I couldn't come up with a better way to phrase that. What I mean is: they can't do anything well. Any other character can outclass them. They suffer from the jack-of-all-trades problem something serious. Even taking all the...

D&D 5E (2014) Party optimisation vs Character optimisation

I definitely agree that the game isn't about damage. The trick with the ranger, though, is they have very little party synergy. Anything they can do, someone else can do better. A fighter does more damage - no question. (Even a paladin, I'm reasonably sure.) A cleric or druid can cover all...

D&D 5E (2014) Party optimisation vs Character optimisation

DaveDash: Thanks for this thread; it's really nice to hear more about higher-level play and things to watch out for re: character builds, party builds, etc. I have a specific question for you (or anyone with lots of higher-level party play experience) and that is: how does a ranger stack up...

D&D 5E (2014) conjure spells are mainly either bad or broken

Didn't remember blur was self-only - thanks! It never even occurred to me to run these spells in any way other than you got to pick the creatures. Re-reading the descriptions, I still don't get that the DM would choose the specific creature and the player would only choose the HD range. (If...

D&D 5E (2014) conjure spells are mainly either bad or broken

Hopefully this will get better as new monsters are released, but at the moment some of the conjure spells are quite bad. Conjure fey has only one creature that can be summoned that couldn't already be summoned by conjure woodland being (a sorry CR 3 green hag), and conjure celestial has 3...

    D&D 5E (2014) Necromancers in 5E

Oh wow - I hadn't thought of that, either. Technically you can inspire any number of creatures, since it just takes 10 minutes to inspire 6 and there are no other limits. There isn't even a duration on the temp HP (other than the normal "until a long rest," which skeletons don't even need to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gaining Experience

Gotcha. If you can get over 15 battles (and any RP) into 8 hours, I will be impressed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Necromancers in 5E

I have always been under the impression - maybe due to some flavor text of previous editions - that when you choose to make a skeleton out of a corpse it automatically just drops all the non-bone parts off and is a skeleton. But the reading of the current spell certainly does not imply that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Necromancers in 5E

Dausuul, thanks for the update! I was definitely one of those interested in hearing about high-level necromancers in play. It's nice to know if you can get all the stars to align, it's awesome, but otherwise it's not a game-breaker. Seems like it would be a blast to play! What is your...

    D&D 5E (2014) do CRs seem a bit arbitrary?

Wow, I completely missed that. You're right: this bumps the Grick up to be much closer to the other bruisers. Thanks! Definitely ranged is the way to go with this guy - it's just amazing how bad it can be if it actually gets close to you, especially since you may not even be able to run...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gaining Experience

I have to say, this thread is really interesting - although my personal opinion falls closer to this. Our group isn't really up for "tactical minis battle game" anymore because that's just not what is interesting to us anymore. Cool stories are our bread and butter, although as others have...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Turn Undead conundrum

Ah. Well I have lots of experience with that adventure, actually, and my advice is: definitely don't worry about it. That may not sit well with you, but here's why I suggest it: first, the undead aren't the things that are going to kill you in that campaign. The traps are. There are also a...
